Toledo rewards anyone willing to get up off the flat, obvious routes. Climb out of the old town toward the Mirador del Valle at sunset and the whole city appears at once — cathedral spires, the Alcázar, and the Tajo gorge wrapped around it like a moat. Head the other way and you're threading past the Puente de Alcántara or looping the ring road for one viewpoint after another, the kind of morning that's hard to fit in if you're stuck waiting on buses.
Toledo's centre is a tangle of steep, cobbled lanes that cars barely fit through, let alone park in — a scooter slips through where a car simply can't, and covers ground a day of walking never will. It also means the surrounding countryside stops being off-limits: a loop out to see the windmills near Consuegra, about 35–40 km away, turns into an easy half-day trip instead of a logistics headache.
For a moped up to 50cc, an AM licence covers you, and a full car licence works too. For a 125cc scooter, you'll need an A1 motorcycle licence — the local rule that lets Spanish B-licence holders ride 125cc after three years only applies within Spain, so most visitors from outside the EU should plan around a proper motorcycle licence instead. If your licence isn't from the EU/EEA, bring an International Driving Permit along with your home licence, since rental desks often ask for both. Expect a minimum age around 18-21 depending on the vehicle, and a deposit blocked on your credit card.
Average rental prices run 25-35 EUR per day in low season and 35-55 EUR per day in high season, with premium models reaching 55-80 EUR per day.
High season runs through the summer months and Easter week, when Toledo fills up and prices sit at their highest. Low season stretches from November to March, with the calmest streets and the best rates. If you want mild weather without the crowds or the premium, May-June and September-October hit the sweet spot — book a little ahead during these shoulder months, since good bikes go fast.
Spain drives on the right. Helmets are mandatory for riders and passengers on mopeds and motorcycles at all times, and headlights stay on day and night. Speed limits top out at 90 km/h on conventional roads and drop to 50 km/h in town, down to 30 km/h on single-lane urban streets — mopeds are capped at 45 km/h and can't use motorways. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, tightened to 0.3 g/l for newer riders. Handheld phones and headphones are off-limits while riding.
