Galicia's Rías Baixas were made for two wheels, and nowhere proves it better than the roads around Pontevedra. Picture yourself leaning through the curves toward Combarro, its granite hórreos standing right at the water's edge, then carrying on to Baiona's walled headland with the Atlantic stretched out below Monte Real. This is a landscape of estuaries, pine-backed hills and fishing villages that rewards slow exploring, and a scooter or motorcycle lets you do exactly that.
Pontevedra's old town is largely closed to cars, so a vehicle you can park in five minutes and forget about is worth more here than in most Spanish cities. Once you're out along the ría, the coast roads to Combarro, Sanxenxo and Cambados twist and dip with the shoreline, and in July or August they clog with holiday traffic that a bike simply threads through. Renting lets you string together several viewpoints and villages in one day rather than crawling between them in a rental car.
For a scooter up to 50cc, an AM licence is enough (minimum age 15 in Spain), and a full car licence also covers you. Above that, a 125cc scooter or motorcycle needs an A1 licence — non-EU visitors usually can't rely on a car licence here and should hold a proper motorcycle licence instead. If your licence wasn't issued in the EU, bring an International Driving Permit along with your home licence, as it's commonly requested at the rental desk. Rental companies typically set their own minimum age, often 18 or 21 depending on the vehicle, and will ask for a deposit blocked on a credit card in your name.
A basic scooter or small motorcycle runs around 25 EUR per day in low season, rising to roughly 35–45 EUR in high season. Larger or premium motorcycles typically cost 60–90 EUR per day, more again in peak weeks.
If you're after the best prices, aim for November to February. For warm weather without the July–August crowds, May–June and September–October hit a good balance. If your trip falls in high season, book ahead — good bikes go quickly once the Galician summer gets underway.
Spain drives on the right. Helmets are mandatory for every rider and passenger on a scooter or motorcycle, on every road, at all times, and motorcycles must run with dipped headlights day and night. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas (dropping to 30 or even 20 km/h on some single-lane urban streets), 90 km/h on conventional roads and 120 km/h on motorways — though mopeds are capped at 45 km/h and aren't allowed on motorways at all. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, reduced to 0.3 g/l for riders with less than two years' experience. Handheld phones and headphones are off-limits while riding.
