Getafe sits close enough to Madrid that you can feel the capital's pull, but far enough to breathe. Swing a leg over a motorcycle here and the whole region opens up: the hilltop monument at Cerro de los Ángeles is minutes from town, while the historic streets around Puerta del Sol are just a short ride north. Skip the parking hunt and the packed metro carriages — on two wheels you go straight to where you want to be.
This is really a launchpad city. Distances to the region's best-known places are short, most under an hour and a half, and the roads vary enough to suit any rider: flat, easy stretches between towns for relaxed cruising, and proper switchback curves once you climb into the Sierra de Guadarrama. Whether you want a lazy morning loop or a full day carving mountain passes, Getafe puts it all within reach, which is exactly why so many riders choose to rent a motorcycle in Getafe rather than base themselves in central Madrid.
The licence you need depends on the bike: an A1 licence covers machines up to 125cc (minimum age 16), an A2 covers restricted-power bikes from age 18, and a full A licence is required for anything unrestricted. Helmets are compulsory for rider and passenger at all times. If your licence was issued outside the EU, bring an International Driving Permit along with your home licence — most rental desks will ask for it. Rental companies usually set their own minimum age, often 18 or 21, and you should expect to leave a deposit blocked on a credit card in your name.
Average rental prices run 25–35 EUR per day in low season and 40–60 EUR per day in high season, with premium touring and sport models running 70–120 EUR per day.
High season on the Spanish mainland runs through July and August, plus Easter week, when prices sit at their peak and bikes get booked up early. Low season stretches from November to March, with the calmest prices and easiest availability. If you want the best mix of good weather and fair pricing, aim for May, June, September or October, and book a little ahead if you're travelling in the busy summer stretch.
Spain drives on the right. Helmets are mandatory for both rider and passenger on mopeds and motorcycles, on every road, at all times, and headlights must stay on day and night. Speed limits top out at 120 km/h on motorways, dropping to 90 km/h on conventional roads, 50 km/h in built-up areas, and as low as 20–30 km/h on shared urban streets. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, tightened to 0.3 g/l for riders with less than two years' experience. Handheld phones and headphones are off-limits while riding.
