Wake up in El Campello with the sea on one side and the whole Costa Blanca coastline on the other, and a motorcycle turns that view into a route instead of a postcard. Head south along the coast road and you're at the base of Castillo de Santa Bárbara in Alicante within half an hour; head north and the colourful harbour houses of Villajoyosa or the cliff-top curves toward Faro de l'Albir are just as close. This is a stretch of Spain built for two wheels — short hops between beach towns, a coastline that keeps unfolding, and mountain roads waiting just inland.
El Campello sits right on the N-332 between Alicante and Benidorm, which means a scooter or motorcycle strings together an entire day of beach towns without the parking headaches a car brings. The coastal road rewards you with sea views at every bend, while the winding route inland toward Guadalest is the kind of road a car simply can't enjoy the same way. Distances are short — Alicante and Villajoyosa are both under 20 km — so a scooter covers the coast easily, while a proper motorcycle makes the most of the mountain loop.
For scooters up to 50cc, an AM licence covers you (a full car licence also works). For a 125cc scooter or motorcycle, you'll need an A1 licence; anything larger requires an A2 or full A licence depending on engine power. If you're travelling from outside the EU, bring an International Driving Permit along with your home licence, since rental desks commonly ask for it. Most companies set their own minimum age, often 18 or 21 depending on the vehicle, and you should expect a deposit blocked on a credit card in your name.
Average prices for a scooter or small motorcycle run 25-30 EUR per day in low season and 40-55 EUR per day in high season, with larger touring or sport bikes reaching 60-90+ EUR per day.
High season runs through July and August, when the coast is busiest and prices sit at their peak. Low season stretches from November to March, with the calmest roads and the lowest rates of the year. If you want warm weather without the crowds or the top prices, May-June and September-October hit the sweet spot for riding this coastline.
Spain drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for riders and passengers on mopeds and motorcycles at all times, and motorcycles must run with dipped headlights day and night. Speed limits are 120 km/h on motorways, 90 km/h on regular roads, and 50 km/h in built-up areas, dropping further on narrow urban streets. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, lowered to 0.3 g/l for riders with less than two years' experience. Handheld phones and headphones are off limits while riding, so plan your route before you set off and enjoy the ride.
