Picture leaving the seafront promenade of Castelldefels behind you, the Mediterranean at your back, and climbing straight into the hills of the Garraf. Within twenty minutes you're winding past the medieval walls of the Castell de Castelldefels, and another twenty puts you on the cliffside curves toward Sitges with the sea glinting far below. A motorcycle turns this stretch of Catalonia into a string of easy half-day loops — the kind of riding that's hard to picture until you're actually doing it.
What makes Castelldefels such a natural base for two wheels is the geography itself: hills on one side, coast on the other, and Barcelona close enough to reach for lunch. Parking is tight in Sitges in summer, the Garraf's mountain roads are narrow and largely traffic-free, and public transport simply doesn't go where the best views are. If you want to rent a motorcycle in Castelldefels, you get access to all of it without waiting on a bus timetable or fighting for a parking spot in a car.
For anything up to 125cc you'll need an A1 licence (available from age 16); larger machines require an A2 or full A licence depending on power output and your age. If your licence isn't from the EU/EEA, bring an International Driving Permit along with your home licence — rental desks generally ask for it. Most companies also set their own minimum age, often 21 or higher for bigger bikes, and will block a deposit on a credit card in your name before handing over the keys.
A small scooter or motorcycle (50–125cc) runs around 25 EUR per day in low season, rising to roughly 40–60 EUR per day in high season. Step up to a larger machine (300–500cc and above) and expect 60–90 EUR per day or more, especially in summer.
High season runs through July and August, plus Easter week, when prices are highest and popular models sell out early — book a few weeks ahead if you're travelling then. Low season stretches from November to March, with quieter roads and the best rates of the year. For the sweet spot of good weather and manageable prices, aim for May, June, September or October.
Spain drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for riders and passengers on mopeds and motorcycles at all times, and headlights must stay on, day and night. Speed limits are 120 km/h on motorways, 90 km/h on conventional roads, and 50 km/h in town, dropping further on narrow urban streets. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, lowered to 0.3 g/l for riders with less than two years' experience — and handheld phones or headphones are off-limits while riding.
