Picture the road curling south out of town on the CV-745, the sea flashing between headlands as you lean into the bends toward Moraira — that's what a morning on two wheels in Calp, Spain feels like. Behind you, the limestone hulk of the Peñón de Ifach rises straight out of the water, and by afternoon you could be climbing into the Sierra de Bernia chasing hairpins most rental-car tourists never see. This is a coastline built for riding, not sitting in traffic.
Calp's old town was never designed for cars: narrow lanes, scarce parking and beaches that sit minutes apart make a scooter the obvious way to get around. Park right at the seafront, skip the search for a spot, and be on the sand at Playa de la Fossa in the time it takes to find a car park elsewhere. Inland, the story changes completely — the Coll de Rates pass and the road up to Guadalest offer real winding mountain riding, the kind that rewards a motorcycle far more than four wheels, all within an hour of town. Between beach-hopping and mountain roads, this is one of the best regions on the Costa Blanca for a scooter rental in Calp.
For a 50cc moped, an AM licence covers you (minimum age 15 in Spain), and a full car licence works too. For a 125cc scooter, you'll need an A1 motorcycle licence — the Spanish rule letting category B drivers ride 125cc after three years only applies inside Spain, so most non-EU visitors should plan on holding an A1. Rental desks commonly ask for an International Driving Permit alongside your home licence if it isn't from the EU/EEA, and most set their own minimum age, often 18 or 21, plus a deposit blocked on a credit card in your name.
A 125cc scooter runs roughly 25-35 EUR per day in low season, rising to 40-60 EUR in high season, and a larger or premium motorcycle (500cc and up) can reach 70-120+ EUR per day in peak months. A few things move the price:
High season runs through July and August, when demand and prices both peak along this stretch of coast. Low season stretches from November to March, with the lowest rates of the year. If you're after milder weather without the summer crowds or cost, May-June and September-October hit a comfortable middle ground. Whatever the season, booking a little ahead secures better availability once the summer months approach.
Spain drives on the right, and helmets are compulsory for every rider and passenger on a moped or motorcycle, on every road, at all times. Speed limits top out at 90 km/h on conventional roads and drop to 50 km/h in built-up areas, with mopeds capped at 45 km/h and barred from motorways. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, tightened to 0.3 g/l for riders with less than two years' experience. Dipped headlights are required day and night on two wheels, and handheld phones are off-limits while riding — simple rules that make exploring this coast by scooter as relaxed as it looks.
