Estepona has a way of rewarding people who wander off the seafront, and a scooter is the easiest way to do exactly that. Duck through the flower-pot-lined lanes of the Old Town, park in seconds near the glasshouse domes of the Orchidarium, then swing past the marina before the evening crowd arrives. If you want to rent a scooter in Estepona, this is the town where two wheels genuinely change how your day unfolds.
The Casco Antiguo was built for feet and mule carts, not cars, so its narrow, pedestrian-heavy streets punish anyone in a rental sedan looking for parking. A scooter slips through with room to spare and tucks into a spot a car never would. Further out, the N-340/A-7 corridor strings together Casares, Marbella and Puerto Banús in day-trip distances of 15 to 30 km — short, breezy rides on a scooter, but a slog by bus. In high season that same road turns into a solid line of traffic, and a nimble scooter is what lets you skip the queue and still find a spot by the beach.
For a moped up to 50cc, an AM licence covers you (the Spanish minimum age is 15), and a full category B car licence also works. For a 125cc scooter you'll need an A1 motorcycle licence — a Spanish or EU category B licence held for at least three years technically qualifies too, but that entitlement only applies inside Spain, so most non-EU visitors should plan on an A1 or motorcycle licence instead. If your licence isn't from the EU/EEA, bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home licence, since rental desks routinely ask for one. Expect a deposit blocked on your credit card, with rental companies often setting their own minimum age at 18 or 21 regardless of the legal licence age.
Prices swing a lot with the season. In low season you're typically looking at 5-12 EUR per day, and in high season 18-30 EUR per day; a premium or larger-cc model runs 25-40 EUR per day.
July and August are the busiest and most expensive months on the mainland, alongside Easter week, so book ahead if you're travelling then. Low season runs November to March, with the lowest prices and the least competition for bikes. If you want the sweet spot — good weather, thinner crowds, calmer prices — aim for May, June, September or October.
Spain drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for riders and passengers on mopeds and scooters at all times, and dipped headlights must stay on day and night. Speed limits top out at 90 km/h on conventional roads and drop to 50 km/h in town, with mopeds capped at 45 km/h and barred from motorways. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, tightened to 0.3 g/l for riders with less than two years' experience. Handheld phones and headphones are off-limits while riding.
