Motril doesn't get the tourist crowds of the bigger Costa del Sol resorts, and that's exactly the point. Rent a scooter here and you can start the morning cruising the flat seafront of Playa de Poniente, then be tucked into the narrow lanes of the old fishing quarter by Playa de Calahonda before most people have finished breakfast. From there the coast road opens up toward Salobreña and Almuñécar, and the whole Costa Tropical starts to feel like your own private route rather than someone else's itinerary.
This is scooter country by design. Motril's old town has tight streets and next to nowhere to park a car, so two wheels solve that problem immediately. But the real draw is what sits just outside town: Salobreña, Almuñécar and La Herradura are all short hops away on the N-340/A-7, a coastal road with easy gradients and a viewpoint worth stopping at every few kilometres. A car rushes past those moments; a scooter lets you actually pull over.
For scooters up to 50cc, an AM licence is enough (minimum age 15 in Spain), and a full car licence covers these too. For 125cc scooters you'll need an A1 licence, or a Spanish/EU category B licence held for at least three years — note that entitlement only works inside Spain, so most non-EU visitors will need an actual motorcycle licence instead. If your licence isn't from the EU, bring an International Driving Permit along with your home licence, since rental desks commonly ask for it. Rental companies usually set their own minimum age, often 18 or 21, and will block a deposit on a credit card in your name.
Average rental prices run from 5 to 12 EUR per day in low season, and 18 to 30 EUR per day in high season, with premium models around 30 to 45 EUR per day.
High season on the Costa Tropical runs through July and August, when demand — and prices — are at their peak. Low season stretches from November to March, with the cheapest rates typically in November through February. If you'd rather skip both the crowds and the summer prices, May-June and September-October hit a comfortable middle ground for riding.
Spain drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger on mopeds and scooters, on every road, at all times. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas (dropping to 30 km/h on single-lane urban roads), 90 km/h on conventional roads, and mopeds are capped at 45 km/h and kept off motorways entirely. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, reduced to 0.3 g/l for riders with less than two years' experience. Scooters and motorcycles must run with dipped headlights day and night, and handheld phones and headphones are off-limits while riding.
