Reus doesn't get the crowds that pile into Barcelona, and that's exactly what makes it such a satisfying place to ride. Park outside the Gaudí Centre, roll down to Plaça Prim for a coffee, then point the handlebars toward the coast — Salou's beaches are fifteen minutes away, and Tarragona's Roman amphitheatre is barely half an hour further. With a scooter you cover all of it in one easy afternoon instead of chasing bus timetables.
The old town is compact and flat, so a scooter clears it faster than walking without the hassle of parking a car. The same goes for the towns around it: Salou, Cambrils and PortAventura all sit within a short, easy hop, distances too long to walk but too short to justify a rental car. Traffic here is gentle compared to Barcelona, which makes Reus a forgiving place to ride even if you're not used to riding on Spanish roads.
For a moped up to 50cc, an AM licence covers you, and a full category B car licence works too. For a 125cc scooter, you'll need an A1 licence, since the B-based entitlement for 125cc only applies to Spanish and EU residents who've held it for at least three years — most visiting tourists won't qualify, so plan around the smaller engine size or bring a motorcycle licence. If your licence isn't from the EU or EEA, carry an International Driving Permit alongside it, as rental desks commonly ask for one. Expect a deposit blocked on a credit card in your name, and note that most rental companies set their own minimum age, often 18 or 21 depending on the vehicle.
Prices swing a fair bit across the year. During low season you're looking at roughly 5-10 EUR per day, while high season runs about 15-25 EUR per day, and premium models can reach 25-35 EUR per day.
If you're after the best rates, aim for the low season between November and March, when prices sit at their lowest. July and August are Reus's high season, driven by the beach crowds heading to Salou and Cambrils, so book ahead if you're travelling then. May, June, September and October hit a nice middle ground — good weather, thinner crowds, and prices well below the summer peak.
Spain drives on the right. Helmets are mandatory for both rider and passenger on any moped or motorcycle, on every road, at all times. Speed limits top out at 50 km/h in built-up areas, dropping to 30 km/h on single-lane urban streets, while mopeds are capped at 45 km/h and can't use motorways. Dipped headlights must stay on day and night. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, tightened to 0.3 g/l if you've held your licence for under two years. Handheld phones and headphones are off-limits while riding.
