Tarragona rewards anyone willing to leave the sidewalk. Ride down to the Balcó del Mediterrani at sunset, and the whole sweep of the coast opens up below the Roman amphitheatre before you drop straight onto Platja del Miracle for a swim. On two wheels you can chain that stop to the fishing quarter of El Serrallo for lunch, then be back at the aqueduct outside town before dinner — a route that would eat your whole day on foot or waiting for buses.
The old town, Part Alta, is exactly the kind of place a scooter was built for: narrow, partly pedestrianised streets where a car won't fit and parking is a headache, but a scooter tucks into a corner and waits. Once you're outside the centre, the coastline and the Roman aqueduct sit a few kilometres out — too far to walk comfortably, too infrequent by local bus, and perfect on a scooter. Mild Mediterranean weather means you can ride through most of the year without much fuss.
For a moped up to 50cc, an AM licence covers you, and a full category B car licence also works. For a 125cc scooter you'll need an A1 licence, since the alternative — a Spanish/EU B licence held three years — only applies inside Spain and won't help most non-EU visitors. If your licence isn't from the EU/EEA, bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home licence, as rental desks usually ask for it. Rental companies typically set their own minimum age, often 18 or 21, and will block a deposit on a credit card in your name.
Prices swing a lot with the calendar. Expect around 5-9 EUR per day in low season and 15-25 EUR per day in high season, with premium models running 20-35 EUR per day.
High season runs through July and August, when the coast fills up and prices climb — book ahead if you're travelling then. Low season stretches from November to March, with the lowest prices and the loosest availability. If you want good weather without the crowds or the summer premium, May-June and September-October hit the sweet spot.
Spain drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger on any moped or motorcycle, on every road, at all times. Speed limits top out at 90 km/h on conventional roads and drop to 50 km/h in town, with mopeds capped at 45 km/h and shut out of motorways entirely. Headlights stay on day and night. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, tightened to 0.3 g/l if you've held your licence less than two years.
