Picture the road from Santa Lucía twisting up through the Fataga Gorge, palm groves and terraced fields sliding past on either side, before it drops you into the whitewashed lanes of Fataga village for a coffee. That's a morning on two wheels here. By afternoon you could be parked beside the dunes at Maspalomas, or tracing the coast down to the little harbour at Puerto de Mogán. A scooter turns a scattered handful of postcard stops into one easy loop.

This is inland Gran Canaria, and the terrain makes the case on its own: Santa Lucía sits up in the mountainous south, with the coastal resorts and the interior villages both close by road but slow and awkward to link by bus. The GC-60 corridor is narrow and full of hairpins — exactly the kind of road a scooter handles better than a hire car, letting you stop at a viewpoint or a beach on a whim rather than sticking to a timetable. If you want to rent a scooter in Santa Lucía, this is a place where it genuinely pays off.

Top 10 things to see in Santa Lucía by scooter

  1. Barranco de Fataga — the scenic ravine road up toward Fataga, with palm groves, terraced fields and dramatic rock walls; a classic south-side ride.
  2. Fataga — a whitewashed hillside village known as the "Oasis of Gran Canaria," with cafés and viewpoints, and an easy run up from the coast.
  3. Mirador de las Yesas — a roadside viewpoint on the GC-60 with sweeping views over the Fataga valley toward the interior.
  4. Playa de Maspalomas — a wide sandy beach beside the dunes, close enough for an easy swim-and-sunset trip.
  5. Dunas de Maspalomas — the protected sand dune reserve that's one of the island's must-see landmarks.
  6. Presa de Soria — Gran Canaria's largest reservoir, reached by a winding mountain road that makes for a longer, scenic loop.
  7. Castillo de la Fortaleza — a rock fortress near the Ansite area riddled with caves and tied to the island's Guanche history, with short walking trails.
  8. Santa Lucía village center — the town's own plaza and small local museum, a good place to get oriented before a longer ride.
  9. Puerto de Mogán — a picturesque canal-front fishing harbour nicknamed "Little Venice," a favourite longer coastal excursion.
  10. Playa de Puerto Rico — a sheltered cove beach on the southwest coast, popular for swimming and watersports.

What do you need to rent a scooter in Santa Lucía?

For scooters up to 50cc, an AM licence covers you (a full category B car licence also works). For 125cc scooters, you'll need an A1 licence, since the alternative — a Spanish or EU category B held for three years — only counts within Spain and won't help most visitors from outside the EU. If your licence isn't from the EU/EEA, bring an International Driving Permit along with it, as rental desks commonly ask for one. Expect a minimum age set by the rental company, often 18 or 21 depending on the vehicle, and a deposit blocked on a credit card in your name.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Santa Lucía?

Prices in the Canary Islands don't follow the mainland calendar — rentals run year-round, and the northern-hemisphere winter is actually the busy season here.

  • Low season (May–June, September–October): roughly 5–10 EUR per day.
  • High season (December–February): roughly 15–25 EUR per day, or 25–40 EUR for a premium model.

When to book a rental scooter in Santa Lucía?

Because Gran Canaria's high season lines up with the northern winter, December through February gets busy and pricier — book ahead if you're travelling then. May–June and September–October are quieter, cheaper, and just as pleasant for riding, so they're a good bet if your dates are flexible.

Local traffic rules in Santa Lucía

Spain drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for riders and passengers on mopeds and motorcycles at all times, on every road. Speed limits are 90 km/h on conventional roads and 50 km/h in built-up areas, dropping to 30 km/h on narrow single-lane urban streets; mopeds are capped at 45 km/h and can't use motorways. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, lower at 0.3 g/l for riders with less than two years' experience. Dipped headlights are required day and night, and handheld phones or headphones are off-limits while riding.
