Mataró doesn't feel like a place you're supposed to rush through. Park a scooter by the promenade at Platja del Varador and within minutes you're riding the seafront with the Mediterranean on one side and the old town's rooftops on the other. Head inland a little and you'll find Gaudí's first real commission, the Nau Gaudí, tucked away from the crowds that flock to his Barcelona work — the kind of find that rewards you for going a bit further than the guidebook suggests.
This is a compact coastal town with narrow old-town lanes, a long seafront promenade, and hilly streets climbing away from the sea, and that combination is exactly where a scooter earns its keep. A car struggles to park anywhere near Plaça Gran, and covering the Camí de Ronda coastal path or nearby Maresme towns on foot simply isn't realistic. On two wheels, none of that is a problem — and you can be in Vilassar, Caldes d'Estrac, or even Barcelona within the day, without waiting on a train timetable.
For a moped up to 50cc, an AM licence is enough, and a full car licence covers this too. For a 125cc scooter you'll need an A1 motorcycle licence — a car licence only qualifies locals who've held it for three years, so most visitors from outside the EU should plan on an A1. If your licence wasn't issued in the EU or EEA, bring an International Driving Permit along with your home licence, as rental desks generally ask for it. Expect a minimum age requirement, usually 18 or 21 depending on the vehicle, and a deposit blocked on a credit card in your name.
Average rental prices run from EUR 5–12 per day in low season up to EUR 18–25 per day in high season, with premium models reaching EUR 25–35 per day.
If you're aiming for July or August, book well ahead — that's when demand and prices both peak along this stretch of coast. From November through March you'll find low season pricing and little need to plan far in advance. May, June, September and October sit in between and are generally the most pleasant months to actually be riding, with milder weather and thinner crowds than the height of summer.
Spain drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for scooter and moped riders and passengers, on every road, at all times. Speed limits top out at 50 km/h in built-up areas, dropping to 30 km/h on single-lane urban streets, and mopeds are capped at 45 km/h and kept off motorways. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, tightened to 0.3 g/l if you've held your licence less than two years. Ride with dipped headlights on at all times, and leave the phone and headphones alone while you're on the move.
