Lleida rewards a bit of independence. Climb the bluff to the Seu Vella and its old fortress walls, drop back down into the baroque streets around the Seu Nova, then coast along the Segre for a coffee with the water in view — on foot, that same loop eats up half a day and a lot of tired legs. With a scooter under you, it takes an hour, and there's still time left to push out toward Gardeny or the river park before dinner.
The old town's charm is also its obstacle: it was built on a steep hill, long before anyone worried about parking a car nearby. A scooter slips through the narrow lanes that cars can't, climbs the bluff to the Seu Vella without breaking a sweat, and still gets you onto the flat riverside paths in minutes. It's the one vehicle that suits both halves of the city, the hilltop and the river plain, without ever leaving you searching for a space.
For a moped up to 50cc, an AM licence covers it (or any full car licence). For a 125cc scooter, you'll need an A1 licence, or a Spanish/EU category B licence held for at least three years — note that this B-based route only counts inside Spain, so most non-EU visitors will need an actual motorcycle licence instead. If your licence isn't from the EU/EEA, bring an International Driving Permit along with it, since rental desks commonly ask for one. Most companies set their own minimum age, often 18 or 21, and will block a deposit on your credit card.
Expect to pay around 5–8 EUR per day in low season, rising to 12–20 EUR in high season, with premium models running 20–30 EUR per day.
If you're chasing the lowest prices, aim for November to February. If you'd rather ride in warm weather and don't mind paying more, June through September is high season, so it's worth booking a little ahead to make sure a scooter is waiting for you when you land.
Spain drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger on any moped or motorcycle, on every road, at all times. Speed limits run up to 90 km/h on conventional roads and drop to 50 km/h in town, down to 30 km/h on narrow single-lane urban streets — and mopeds are capped at 45 km/h and kept off motorways altogether. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, so it's best to keep it to zero if you're riding. Headlights stay on, day and night, whenever you're on two wheels.
