Perched on a hillside a few kilometers back from the coast, La Nucia is the kind of base that rewards a bit of independence. Rent a scooter here and the Costa Blanca opens up fast — you can be swimming at the natural pools of Fuentes del Algar within half an hour, or climbing the switchbacks toward Guadalest to see its reservoir glinting green below the castle walls. This is not a place built around a single beach; it's a launchpad for a whole string of them.
Cars struggle here for a reason: village centers like Polop and Guadalest were laid out long before anyone owned a car, so parking is scarce and streets narrow to a squeeze. A scooter slips through both, and it climbs the hills around La Nucia without the effort a bicycle demands. If you want to string together a waterfall, a clifftop village and a beach afternoon in the same day, two wheels handle the terrain a car or your own legs simply can't.
For a 50cc moped, an AM licence covers you (a full car licence works too). For a 125cc scooter, you'll need an A1 motorcycle licence — a car-based entitlement for 125cc only applies to Spanish and EU residents who've held it three years, so most visitors from outside the EU should bring a motorcycle licence and an International Driving Permit alongside it. Rental companies here typically set their own minimum age, often 18 or 21, and will hold a deposit on a credit card in your name.
Prices swing with the season, starting from around 5 EUR per day at the low end and reaching 13–20 EUR per day in peak months. Larger or premium models run 20–30 EUR and up.
July and August bring the highest demand and prices, alongside Easter week, so book ahead if you're travelling then. From November through March things are quieter and cheaper, and May–June or September–October hit a comfortable middle ground — good weather without the peak-season crowds or rates.
Spain drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger on any moped or motorcycle, at all times. Speed limits run up to 90 km/h on regular roads and drop to 50 km/h in town, with mopeds capped at 45 km/h and kept off motorways. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, tightening to 0.3 g/l for riders with less than two years' experience. Ride with your headlight on day and night, and use the search form at the top of the page whenever you're ready to book. Have a nice trip!
