Basauri sits close enough to Bilbao that a scooter turns the whole valley into your backyard. Fifteen minutes along the Nervion river and you are parked outside the titanium curves of the Museo Guggenheim Bilbao; a few more turns and you are wandering the tapas bars of Casco Viejo. Rent a scooter in Basauri and the city stops being a place you pass through on the way to somewhere else — it becomes your own route, timed by you, not by a bus schedule.
This is Basque hill country, and the streets here climb and twist the way commuter towns in this region tend to. A scooter takes the grades in stride and slips into parking spots a car never could, while still covering the short hop into central Bilbao far faster than waiting on transit. It also opens up detours that public transport barely touches, like the switchbacks up Monte Pagasarri or a quiet run along the estuary toward the coast — the kind of side trips that make a rental worth it.
For a scooter up to 50cc, an AM licence covers you (minimum age 15 in Spain), and any full category B car licence works too. For a 125cc model, you will need an A1 licence — a Spanish B licence held over three years only counts inside Spain, so most non-EU visitors should bring a motorcycle licence instead. If your licence was not issued in the EU, carry an International Driving Permit alongside it, since rental desks usually ask for one. Expect a deposit, normally blocked on a credit card, with the exact amount depending on the model.
A basic scooter runs from 5 to 8 EUR per day in low season, rising to 12-18 EUR per day in high season. Premium models go for 20-25 EUR per day.
High season runs through July and August, when demand and prices both climb. Low season stretches from November to March, with the cheapest daily rates of the year. If you are flexible, aim for the shoulder months around spring or early autumn for a good balance of mild weather and lower rates, and book a little ahead if your trip falls in summer.
Spain drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger on any moped or scooter, on every road, at all times. Speed limits top out at 50 km/h in built-up areas, dropping to 30 km/h on single-lane urban roads, and mopeds are capped at 45 km/h and kept off motorways. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, tightened to 0.3 g/l for riders with under two years of experience. Scooters and mopeds must run with dipped headlights day and night, and handheld phones or headphones are off-limits while riding.
