Almería doesn't announce itself the way Barcelona or Seville do, and that's exactly why it rewards a rider willing to look closer. Wind through the old town beneath the Alcazaba de Almería, then point your handlebars east along the coast toward the volcanic cliffs of Cabo de Gata — on a scooter, both belong to the same easy afternoon. You will trade crowded tour buses for empty coves, and reach places most visitors never see because they never had the freedom to look for them.
This is a city built for two wheels rather than four. The historic centre is a knot of narrow lanes and scarce parking that punishes anyone dragging a rental car through it, while the coastal road out to Cabo de Gata and the desert routes toward Tabernas are flat, open and made for covering distance without effort. A scooter slips into gaps a car never could and covers more ground than you'd manage on foot or by bicycle, which is why it's the natural way to see Almería properly.
For anything up to 50cc, an AM licence covers you, and a full car licence works too. For 125cc scooters, EU visitors need an A1 licence or a category B licence held for at least three years — but that B-based entitlement only applies inside Spain, so most non-EU travellers will need an actual motorcycle licence instead. If your licence wasn't issued in the EU, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it, since rental desks commonly ask for one. Expect rental companies to set their own minimum age, often 18 or 21, and to hold a deposit on a credit card in your name.
Prices swing a lot across the year. Expect to pay 5-15 EUR per day in low season and 20-35 EUR per day in high season, with premium models running 35-50 EUR per day.
High season runs through July and August, plus Easter week, when prices climb and popular models get booked out early. Low season stretches from November through March, with the calmest, cheapest rates of the year. If you want the best of both — good weather without the crowds or the premium price — May, June, September and October are the sweet spot.
Spain drives on the right. Helmets are mandatory for riders and passengers on mopeds and scooters at all times, on every road. Speed limits top out at 50 km/h in built-up areas, dropping to 30 km/h on narrow single-lane urban streets, and mopeds are capped at 45 km/h and barred from motorways. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, tightened to 0.3 g/l for riders with less than two years' experience. Headlights stay on day and night, and handheld phones and headphones are off-limits while riding.
