Acireale rewards anyone willing to leave the car behind. Its baroque centro storico is a tangle of narrow lava-stone streets built centuries before parking lots were invented, and the coast just below town drops in tight switchbacks toward the sea. Rent a scooter in Acireale and you can weave through Piazza Duomo one hour, then be sipping something cold at the tiny harbour of Santa Maria La Scala the next — a route a car simply cannot take comfortably. From there the coast road opens up toward Aci Trezza's sea stacks and the black-rock castle at Aci Castello, with Catania and even Mount Etna's lower slopes within easy reach for the day.
This is scooter country almost by design. The old town has scarce parking and streets too narrow for comfortable driving, so a scooter slips through where a car gets stuck. Once you're out of the centre, the real appeal shows itself on the coast: short, scenic, winding roads built for something small and nimble, from the descent to Santa Maria La Scala to the longer haul up toward Etna's vineyards. A **scooter rental in Acireale** turns what would be a frustrating drive into the best part of the trip.
For a 50cc moped up to 45 km/h, an AM category licence is enough. For anything from 50cc up to 125cc you'll need an A1 category licence. Some rental operators accept a full car (B) licence for 125cc scooters, but this varies, so check with them before booking. If your licence was issued outside the EU/EEA, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it. Most operators set their own minimum age, usually 18, and will ask for a deposit as a credit card hold or cash, scaled to the value of the scooter.
A basic 50cc scooter runs from EUR 5 to EUR 10 per day in low season, climbing to EUR 20–35 per day in high season. If you want something bigger, a 125cc-plus model in high season costs EUR 35–50 or more per day.
High season runs June through August, with July and August the busiest and most expensive. Low season stretches from November to March, when prices drop and some seasonal outlets scale back their hours. If you want the best mix of good weather and lighter crowds, aim for May, June, September or early October, and book ahead if you're arriving in summer — coastal Sicily fills up fast.
Italy drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for every rider and passenger on a scooter, moped or motorcycle, no exceptions. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on ordinary roads outside town; a 50cc moped is capped at 45 km/h and can't use motorways or main dual carriageways. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, dropping to zero if you've held your licence less than three years. Keep your headlight on at all times, even by day, and watch for ZTL restricted zones in the historic centre — entering without a permit brings an automatic fine.
