Capri doesn't do cars well — and once you've spent a morning weaving between Anacapri's whitewashed walls on two wheels, you won't want it to. Ride up to the Faro di Punta Carena for sunset over the water, or let the road climb toward Villa San Michele with the Sorrento coast opening up beside you. A scooter turns the island from a postcard into somewhere you actually get to explore, one hairpin bend at a time.
Capri and Anacapri's centers are pedestrian zones, so cars barely fit and buses crawl on a timetable that won't suit a day trip. A scooter is really the only private vehicle that makes sense here: light enough for the narrow lanes, quick enough to handle the constant climbs and drops between town and coastline, and free to stop wherever a viewpoint demands it. If you're going to rent a scooter in Capri, this is exactly the kind of island it was built for.
For a 50cc moped you'll need at least a category AM licence; anything from 51cc up to 125cc calls for category A1. A full car (B) licence sometimes covers 125cc scooters within Italy, though rental operators differ on whether they'll accept a foreign B licence for this, so it's worth confirming when you book. If your licence wasn't issued in the EU/EEA, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it. Most operators want riders to be adults and will ask for a deposit, usually held on a credit card, scaled to the value of the bike.
Expect around 5-15 EUR per day in low season, rising to 25-45 EUR per day in high season, with premium models running 40-60 EUR per day.
High season runs June to August, with July and August the busiest and priciest months on the island. Low season stretches from November through March, when many seasonal outlets scale back or close and prices drop accordingly. If you want good weather without the crowds or the top-end rates, May, June, September and early October hit the sweet spot — book a few weeks out even then, since Capri's rental stock is limited by the island itself.
Italy drives on the right, and helmets are compulsory for every rider and passenger on a scooter, no exceptions by age. Speed limits top out at 50 km/h in built-up areas, though Capri's tight, twisting roads rarely let you get near that. Dipped headlights stay on at all times on two wheels, and the blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l — zero if you're under 21 or have held your licence less than three years.
