Picture swapping the lake-ferry queues for the open road: the hill above town crowned by the copper giant of the Sacro Monte di San Carlo, the ruined ramparts of the Rocca di Arona catching the evening light, and Stresa's belle-epoque waterfront just a short ride up the shore. Arona sits right on Lake Maggiore's western bank, and once you rent a scooter in Arona, all of that stops being a list of things you read about and becomes an afternoon you actually have.

This stretch of Lake Maggiore was practically made for two wheels. The coast road links Arona to Stresa, Angera and Meina in distances a scooter eats up in minutes, but a car will circle forever looking for parking and a bicycle will struggle on the climb up to Mottarone. A scooter gives you the freedom to stop wherever a view opens up, without waiting on a ferry timetable or hunting for a space.

Top 10 things to see in Arona by scooter

  1. Sacro Monte di San Carlo (Colosso di San Carlo Borromeo) — the giant 17th-century copper statue and sanctuary on the hill above town, a short and iconic ride.
  2. Rocca di Arona (Rocca Borromea ruins) — the ruined fortress on the lakeside bluff, with panoramic views over Arona and the water.
  3. Arona Lungolago — the flat lakefront promenade past cafes, the marina and views across to Angera.
  4. Angera and Rocca di Angera — a quick ride or short ferry hop around the lake's southern tip to the imposing medieval castle facing Arona.
  5. Stresa lakefront — the classic run up the western shore to this belle-epoque resort town, with the Isole Borromee just offshore.
  6. Isola Bella and Isola dei Pescatori — ride to the embarkation points in Stresa and Baveno for the famous Borromean Islands.
  7. Mottarone summit road — a winding mountain climb from Stresa to a panoramic viewpoint over both Lake Maggiore and Lake Orta.
  8. Lago d'Orta and Orta San Giulio — a scenic loop over the hills to the smaller, postcard-pretty lake and its lakeside village.
  9. Meina and Lesa — quiet lakeshore villages just north of Arona, with villas and small beaches, ideal for a short ride.
  10. Arona old town and Villa Ponti — the arcaded Piazza del Popolo and lakeside villa gardens, easy to reach within town.

What do you need to rent a scooter in Arona?

For a 50cc moped topping out at 45 km/h, an AM category licence is enough, available in Italy from age 14. For scooters between 50cc and 125cc you'll need an A1 licence, though holders of a full car (B) licence can sometimes ride a 125cc locally — check with the operator before you book, as acceptance of foreign B licences varies. If your licence wasn't issued in the EU/EEA, bring an International Driving Permit. Rental shops usually ask for a minimum age of 18 and take a deposit, most often as a credit card hold, scaled to the value of the scooter.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Arona?

A basic 50cc scooter runs around 15-20 EUR per day in low season and climbs to 30-45 EUR in high season, while 125cc and premium models can reach 45-70 EUR per day at the peak.

  • Cheapest around November to March, when demand on the lake drops off.
  • Priciest in July and August, when the lakefront and hill towns are busiest.

When to book a rental scooter in Arona?

July and August bring the highest prices and the thickest traffic along the shore road, so if you can, aim for May, June, September or early October instead — warmer than the shoulder months, quieter than midsummer, and easier on your wallet. Outside of high season, from November through March, many seasonal outlets around the lake scale back or close, so book ahead rather than showing up and hoping.

Local traffic rules in Arona

Italy drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for every rider and passenger on a scooter, no exceptions by age. Speed limits are 50 km/h in town, 90 km/h on ordinary roads outside built-up areas, and 110 km/h on main extra-urban dual carriageways — though a 50cc moped is capped at 45 km/h and can't use the faster roads at all. Dipped headlights stay on at all times, day and night. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, dropping to zero if you've held your licence less than three years or are under 21.
