Lecce earns its nickname "the Florence of the South" from the honey-coloured Baroque stone of its old town, and the best way to soak it in is on two wheels. Park a car near the centre and you'll spend your holiday circling for a spot; on a scooter you can duck down the lanes around the Basilica di Santa Croce, then be at the sea in under an hour, whether that's the cliffs of Otranto or the sandy curve of Torre dell'Orso.
The historic centre is compact and largely closed to cars, which makes a scooter the natural way to move between its piazzas without breaking a sweat in the Salento sun. Beyond the walls, the appeal only grows: the coastal towns that ring the peninsula sit 30 to 60 minutes away on roads made for riding, but they can turn into a parking headache by car once summer traffic builds up. If you want to rent a scooter in Lecce and see both the city and the coast without being tied to bus timetables, this is the way to do it.
For a 50cc moped capped at 45 km/h, an AM category licence is enough. Anything from 50cc up to 125cc calls for an A1 licence; holders of a full car licence sometimes qualify to ride a 125cc scooter too, but rules on foreign licences vary by operator, so confirm this when you book. If your licence wasn't issued in the EU or EEA, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it. Rental shops in Lecce typically require riders to be adults and will take a deposit, usually as a credit card hold, scaled to the value of the scooter — expect to leave your ID or passport details on file too.
Prices swing a lot with the season:
July and August are peak season in Salento — the beaches are packed, and scooters get booked up early, so reserve ahead if you're travelling then. November through March is the quiet stretch, with the lowest rates but also fewer open rental outlets along the coast. If you'd rather skip both extremes, aim for late spring or early autumn: warm, dry days with none of the midsummer crowding or pricing.
Italy drives on the right, and helmets are compulsory for every rider and passenger on a scooter, no exceptions. In town, the speed limit is 50 km/h; a 50cc moped is capped at 45 km/h regardless and can't go on the main dual carriageways. Dipped headlights stay on at all times, day or night. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, dropping to zero for anyone under 21 or who has held a licence for less than three years. One more thing worth knowing: Lecce's old town has camera-enforced restricted zones (ZTL), so stick to the routes your rental company points out to avoid a fine landing in your inbox months later.
