Bari doesn't announce itself the way Rome or Venice do — it takes a little movement to reveal itself. Wander into Bari Vecchia and you'll find a maze of white lanes where nonnas set up folding tables to hand-roll orecchiette right outside their front doors, Baroque church facades crowd in overhead, and the Adriatic keeps flashing into view between buildings. A scooter is what turns this from a single afternoon into a whole coastal weekend: ride the seafront promenade at sunset, then follow the coast road down to the clifftop town of Polignano a Mare, where the sea has carved a cove right under the old bridge.
Bari rewards two wheels precisely because it resists four. Cars can't fit down the alleys of the old town, and parking anywhere near the centre is a scarce, frustrating hunt. The coast south of the city, meanwhile, runs flat and scenic along a road that hugs the shoreline toward Mola di Bari and Polignano — short, easy distances that turn into a proper day trip on a scooter but a logistical headache by bus or car. If you want to **rent a scooter in Bari**, it's simply the way locals get around, and it'll work just as well for you.
For a 50cc moped you'll need at least a category AM licence; anything from 50cc up to 125cc calls for category A1. If you only hold a car (B) licence, some operators will let you ride a 125cc scooter under Italy's local allowance — but this varies by rental company, so confirm before you book. Non-EU licence holders should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence. Most shops set their own minimum age, generally 18, and will ask for a deposit on a credit card or in cash, scaled to the value of the scooter.
Expect to pay around 5–15 EUR per day in low season and 20–35 EUR per day in high season, with premium, larger-cc models running 35–50 EUR per day.
High season runs June to August, when the coast roads to Polignano and Mola di Bari get busiest and prices sit at their peak. Low season stretches from November to March, when demand — and cost — drop off. If you can, aim for May, June, September or early October: the weather is still warm, the roads are quieter, and you'll pay noticeably less than in midsummer. Whatever the season, book a little ahead if you're travelling in July or August, since availability tightens up fast.
Italy drives on the right, and helmets are compulsory for every rider and passenger on a scooter, with no exceptions. Speed limits are 50 km/h in town, 90 km/h on ordinary roads outside built-up areas, and up to 110 km/h on extra-urban dual carriageways — though 50cc mopeds are capped at 45 km/h and can't use motorways or dual carriageways. Dipped headlights stay on at all times, day and night. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, dropping to zero if you've held your licence less than three years. One more thing worth knowing: Bari Vecchia falls under a camera-enforced ZTL zone, so stick to the routes open to visitors, or a fine may follow you home.
