Savona doesn't get the crowds that swarm the Cinque Terre or Portofino, and that's exactly its charm. Base yourself near the Priamàr Fortress in the old town, and within minutes you can be riding the coast road toward Varigotti's pastel houses or the cliffside castle at Noli. A scooter rental in Savona turns a strip of the Riviera delle Palme most tourists only see from a train window into your own private route.
The old town itself is compact and mostly closed to cars, so you'll want to explore it on foot — but the real reason to rent here is the coast. Traffic in Savona is light by Italian standards, the seafront is flat, and the only climbs are short hops up to headlands like Bergeggi. That's ideal territory for a small-displacement scooter: enough range to string together two or three beach towns in an afternoon, without fighting for parking or waiting on the coastal train timetable.
For a 50cc moped capped at 45 km/h, an AM licence is enough, available in Italy from age 14. Anything from 50cc up to 125cc calls for an A1 licence. If you only hold a car (B) licence, some operators will let you ride a 125cc scooter under Italian rules, but not every rental company accepts a foreign B licence this way, so confirm before you book. Non-EU licence holders should bring an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence. Expect to leave a deposit, usually as a credit card hold, scaled to the value of the scooter, plus a copy of your ID or passport.
A basic 50cc scooter runs roughly 5-15 EUR per day in low season and climbs to about 25-45 EUR per day in high season. Step up to a 125cc or higher-spec model and high-season rates can reach 50-70 EUR per day.
July and August are Savona's high season — hot, busy, and the best time to book weeks ahead if you want a specific model. Low season runs November through March, when prices fall but some smaller operators cut their hours or close for winter. If you can, aim for May, June, September or early October: the coast road to Varigotti and Finale Ligure is quieter, the weather is still warm, and scooters are easier to find on short notice.
Italy drives on the right, and a helmet is mandatory for every rider and passenger on a scooter, moped or motorcycle — no exceptions by age. Inside town, the speed limit is 50 km/h; on ordinary roads outside built-up areas it rises to 90 km/h. A 50cc moped tops out at 45 km/h and can't use motorways or main dual carriageways, which won't matter much for the town-and-coast riding Savona is built for. Keep your dipped headlights on at all times, day or night, and stay under the 0.5 g/l blood-alcohol limit — zero if you're under 21 or have held your licence less than three years. If you're heading into the old town, watch for ZTL restricted-zone signs; riding through one without a permit brings an automatic fine.
