Rimini rewards anyone willing to leave the beach umbrella behind for an afternoon. Cross the Ponte di Tiberio into the old town, wind past Piazza Cavalli and the Malatesta fortress, then run the coast road down to Riccione with the Adriatic on one side and gelato stands on the other. On a scooter this is a loop you finish in a morning — on foot it's a day, and by car it's a parking headache.
The centro storico is built for two wheels, not four: one-way lanes, tight corners, and almost nowhere to leave a car. A scooter slips through all of it and parks wherever you land. The Riviera Romagnola itself is flat and straight, so cruising the lungomare toward Riccione or Cattolica takes no effort at all, while the hills behind the coast — toward San Marino and San Leo — give you switchbacks that are far more fun leaning into on a scooter than crawling up in traffic.
For a 50cc moped you'll need at least an AM licence; anything from 51cc up to 125cc calls for an A1 licence. If you're riding on a standard car (B) licence, some operators will let you take out a 125cc scooter under Italy's local allowance — but this varies by rental company, so confirm it when you book. Non-EU licence holders should bring an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence. Most shops set a minimum age around 18 and take a deposit, usually a hold on your credit card, scaled to the value of the scooter.
Expect to pay EUR 5-15/day in low season, and EUR 20-40/day during the July and August rush. Premium or larger-displacement scooters, including Vespa-style 125cc+ models, run EUR 35-60/day at peak.
If you're chasing the lowest prices, the winter months from November to March are quietest, though some seasonal outlets on the coast scale back or close. High season runs June through August, when Rimini's beaches and the whole Riviera Romagnola get busy and rates climb toward the EUR 40/day mark. The sweet spot is May, June, September and early October — warm, far less crowded, and easier to find availability without booking weeks ahead. In July and August it's worth reserving your scooter rental in Rimini in advance, since the best bikes go quickly.
Italy drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for every rider and passenger, no exceptions, and dipped headlights must stay on at all times on a scooter, day or night. Speed limits are 50 km/h in town, 90 km/h on regular roads outside built-up areas, and up to 110 km/h on the main extra-urban routes — though a 50cc moped is capped at 45 km/h and can't use motorways or the faster dual carriageways. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, dropping to zero if you've held your licence less than three years or are under 21. One more thing to watch for in the old town: camera-enforced ZTL zones catch anyone riding into the historic center without a permit, and the fine tends to arrive by post months later.
