Picture swapping the crowded pavements around Terme Tettuccio for the open road — that's what a scooter gets you in Montecatini Terme. Once you've admired the Art Nouveau spa halls in the centre, twist the throttle and you can be climbing the switchbacks to Montecatini Alto in minutes, or gliding through the countryside toward Collodi and its Pinocchio Park before lunch. This is a town built for slow strolls in its centre and fast escapes beyond it, and a scooter lets you do both.
Montecatini Terme itself is compact and easily walkable, but everything interesting around it sits just out of comfortable walking range and awkward driving range. Hilltop villages, walled cities and hillside museums are scattered 10–30 km out along narrow, winding Tuscan roads where cars struggle to park and buses run on their own schedule. A scooter closes that gap: it handles the climb to Montecatini Alto with ease and lets you leave it right at the gates of Lucca instead of hunting for a car park outside the walls.
For a 50cc moped, an AM category licence covers you. Anything from 51cc up to 125cc requires an A1 licence, and while Italian rules allow full car (B) licence holders to ride a 125cc scooter under certain conditions, not every rental company accepts a foreign B licence for this, so check before you book. If your licence wasn't issued in the EU or EEA, bring an International Driving Permit along with it. Rental shops typically ask for a minimum age of 18 and take a deposit, usually as a credit card hold, scaled to the value of the bike.
Prices swing a lot with the season. A small 50cc scooter can run as little as 5-15 EUR per day in the quiet months, while a standard scooter in peak summer typically costs 20-35 EUR per day. Step up to a larger 125-150cc model in high season and you're looking at 35-50+ EUR per day.
If you can be flexible, the low season from November through March brings the lowest rates and the quietest roads up to Montecatini Alto. High season runs June through August, when prices climb and popular models get booked up well in advance, so reserve a couple of weeks ahead if you're travelling in July or August. Spring and early autumn strike the best balance of mild weather and reasonable prices.
Italy drives on the right, and helmets are mandatory for every rider and passenger on a scooter, moped or motorcycle, no exceptions. In built-up areas the speed limit is 50 km/h, rising to 90 km/h on ordinary roads outside town; 50cc mopeds are capped at 45 km/h and can't use dual carriageways or motorways. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, dropping to zero for anyone who has held a licence less than three years. Keep your headlight on at all times, even in daylight, and watch for ZTL restricted-traffic zones in historic centres like Lucca and Pistoia — ride into one without a permit and the fine finds you months later. Ready to explore? Use the search form at the top of the page to find your scooter.
