Lucca has a trick up its sleeve that most first-time visitors miss: the old town sits almost entirely inside its Renaissance walls, and once you're through the gates, cars barely get a look in. A scooter is the natural way around this — quick enough to slip out to the marble foothills of the Alpi Apuane in the afternoon, small enough to park by Piazza dell'Anfiteatro without a second thought, and free enough that a morning spin along the Mura di Lucca feels like the city's own welcome ritual.

The historic centre's ZTL rules keep most private cars out entirely, so anyone arriving with four wheels ends up parking outside and walking in anyway. A scooter sidesteps that problem, and it comes into its own the moment you want to leave town — the Serchio valley opens up into gently winding roads toward spa towns and mountain villages that are awkward to reach on foot and a hassle to drive. If you're weighing up a scooter rental in Lucca, this is really where the appeal lies: total freedom inside the walls and out.

Top 10 things to see in Lucca by scooter

  1. Mura di Lucca (the Renaissance city walls promenade) — a flat, tree-lined ring road atop the walls, and the obvious first loop of the old town.
  2. Piazza dell'Anfiteatro — an oval square built right into the ruins of a Roman amphitheatre, a quick stop inside the walls.
  3. Torre Guinigi — a short ride into the centre, with oak trees growing on its roof and a view over the city worth the climb.
  4. Duomo di San Martino — Lucca's cathedral, an easy in-town ride and one of the best photo stops in the centre.
  5. Villa Reale di Marlia — a historic villa and gardens just north of Lucca, a popular half-day scooter excursion.
  6. Ponte del Diavolo (Ponte della Maddalena) — a dramatic medieval hump-backed bridge over the Serchio, a favourite scenic ride out of town.
  7. Bagni di Lucca — a spa town up the Serchio valley, reached by a winding road that's made for a longer route into the hills.
  8. Alpi Apuane foothills — proper twisty mountain roads with marble-quarry scenery for riders who want more than a flat cruise.
  9. Viareggio seafront — a beach town on the coast around 30–40 minutes away, with a promenade and Art Nouveau architecture.
  10. Torre delle Ore — Lucca's clock tower, another central landmark easily folded into a walk or ride through the old core.

What do you need to rent a scooter in Lucca?

For a 50cc moped you need at least a category AM licence; anything from 51cc up to 125cc requires category A1. Visitors from outside the EU should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence. Rental shops generally set their own minimum age around 18 and take a deposit, usually as a credit card hold, scaled to the value of the scooter — confirm the exact figure with the operator before booking.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Lucca?

Prices swing a lot with the season. In low season you can find a basic scooter from around EUR 5 per day on a multi-day rental, while in high season a standard 50cc–125cc scooter typically runs EUR 25–45 per day. Larger or newer models can reach EUR 40–70 or more per day.

  • Cheapest: November to February, outside promotional multi-day rates.
  • Most expensive: June through August, Tuscany's peak tourist season.

When to book a rental scooter in Lucca?

If you can, aim for May, June, September or early October — warm, dry, and much quieter than midsummer, with better availability and lower rates than the June–August peak. Booking a couple of weeks ahead is sensible in high season, since the best scooters go first; in the low season from November to March you can usually arrange a rental with little notice, and at the lowest prices of the year.

Local traffic rules in Lucca

Italy drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for every rider and passenger on a scooter, no exceptions, and dipped headlights must stay on at all times, day and night. Speed limits are 50 km/h in town, 90 km/h on regular roads outside built-up areas, and up to 110 km/h on extra-urban dual carriageways — a 50cc moped, though, is capped at 45 km/h and can't use motorways or those faster dual carriageways. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, dropping to zero for anyone under 21 or who has held a licence for less than three years. And watch for the ZTL cameras around the historic centre: ride in without a permit and the fine finds you months later, usually with a rental company admin fee attached.
