Lucca has a trick up its sleeve that most first-time visitors miss: the old town sits almost entirely inside its Renaissance walls, and once you're through the gates, cars barely get a look in. A scooter is the natural way around this — quick enough to slip out to the marble foothills of the Alpi Apuane in the afternoon, small enough to park by Piazza dell'Anfiteatro without a second thought, and free enough that a morning spin along the Mura di Lucca feels like the city's own welcome ritual.
The historic centre's ZTL rules keep most private cars out entirely, so anyone arriving with four wheels ends up parking outside and walking in anyway. A scooter sidesteps that problem, and it comes into its own the moment you want to leave town — the Serchio valley opens up into gently winding roads toward spa towns and mountain villages that are awkward to reach on foot and a hassle to drive. If you're weighing up a scooter rental in Lucca, this is really where the appeal lies: total freedom inside the walls and out.
For a 50cc moped you need at least a category AM licence; anything from 51cc up to 125cc requires category A1. Visitors from outside the EU should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence. Rental shops generally set their own minimum age around 18 and take a deposit, usually as a credit card hold, scaled to the value of the scooter — confirm the exact figure with the operator before booking.
Prices swing a lot with the season. In low season you can find a basic scooter from around EUR 5 per day on a multi-day rental, while in high season a standard 50cc–125cc scooter typically runs EUR 25–45 per day. Larger or newer models can reach EUR 40–70 or more per day.
If you can, aim for May, June, September or early October — warm, dry, and much quieter than midsummer, with better availability and lower rates than the June–August peak. Booking a couple of weeks ahead is sensible in high season, since the best scooters go first; in the low season from November to March you can usually arrange a rental with little notice, and at the lowest prices of the year.
Italy drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for every rider and passenger on a scooter, no exceptions, and dipped headlights must stay on at all times, day and night. Speed limits are 50 km/h in town, 90 km/h on regular roads outside built-up areas, and up to 110 km/h on extra-urban dual carriageways — a 50cc moped, though, is capped at 45 km/h and can't use motorways or those faster dual carriageways. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, dropping to zero for anyone under 21 or who has held a licence for less than three years. And watch for the ZTL cameras around the historic centre: ride in without a permit and the fine finds you months later, usually with a rental company admin fee attached.
