Pantelleria doesn't do easy distances. Beaches give way to lava-rock coves, and the coast road twists up toward Montagna Grande before dropping back to sea level, so the island rewards anyone on two wheels who can duck into a lane a car would never fit. Ride the ring road at your own pace and you can soak your feet in the warm mud of the Specchio di Venere in the morning, then chase the sunset out to the Arco dell'Elefante in Cala Levante by evening — both barely twenty minutes apart on a scooter, a slog by bus.
The whole island is under 15km across, crossed by one narrow coastal road and a scatter of steep interior lanes, which is exactly the terrain a scooter was built for. Traffic is light, parking a car near the thermal pools is a hassle, and a scooter slips into the hairpins toward Montagna Grande without a second thought. That's why so many visitors choose to rent a scooter in Pantelleria rather than deal with a rental car on roads this tight.
For a 50cc moped you need at least a category AM licence, available in Italy from age 14. For anything from 50cc up to 125cc you need category A1, though holders of a full car licence may be allowed to ride a 125cc scooter depending on the rental operator — it's worth confirming with them directly. If your licence was issued outside the EU/EEA, bring an International Driving Permit along with it. Most rental shops on the island set their own minimum age, usually 18, and take a deposit as a credit card hold or in cash, scaled to the value of the scooter.
A basic 50cc scooter runs roughly 15-25 EUR per day in low season and climbs to 35-60 EUR per day at the height of summer. Larger scooters or multi-day premium bookings can reach 50-80 EUR per day in high season.
High season runs June through August, with late July and August the most expensive and the hardest to book last-minute. Low season stretches from November to March, when prices drop but some outlets scale back their hours. If you want good weather without the summer crush, aim for May, June, September or early October — you'll find better rates and an easier time finding a free scooter.
Italy drives on the right. Helmets are mandatory for every rider and passenger on a scooter, no matter their age, with no exemptions. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on ordinary roads outside town — a 50cc moped is capped at 45 km/h in any case. Dipped headlights stay on at all times, day and night. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, and it drops to zero if you've held your licence less than three years. Ready to explore?
