Procida rewards anyone willing to leave the ferry landing behind. Hop on a scooter and within minutes you can drop down the steep lane into Marina Corricella, weave along the water to Chiaiolella Marina for lunch, then climb up to Terra Murata to watch the light change over the Bay of Naples. It's an island small enough to circle in an afternoon, yet varied enough that every turn feels like a different postcard.

At just 4 square kilometres, Procida packs its charm into narrow, winding lanes that were never built with cars in mind, and parking space in the historic quarters is scarce at the best of times. A scooter slips through where a car can't and parks where a car won't fit, letting you string together the citadel, the fishing village and the western beaches in one loop instead of waiting on the island's limited bus service. If you want to rent a scooter in Procida, this is really the only way to see it properly.

Top 10 things to see in Procida by scooter

  1. Marina Corricella — the island's pastel-colored fishing harbor and its most photographed corner, reached down a steep lane from the center.
  2. Terra Murata — the highest point on Procida, home to the old citadel and sweeping views over the Bay of Naples.
  3. Marina Grande — the main ferry port lined with colorful houses, a natural starting point for any ride around the island.
  4. Chiaiolella Marina — a yacht harbor at the southern tip with waterfront restaurants, ideal for watching the sunset.
  5. Spiaggia della Chiaiolella — a sandy beach right next to the marina, with easy scooter parking close by.
  6. Spiaggia del Pozzo Vecchio — the long west-coast beach known as the "Il Postino" beach, reached along a scenic coastal road.
  7. Isola di Vivara — a protected nature reserve linked to Procida by a footbridge near Chiaiolella, worth the short detour.
  8. Abbazia di San Michele Arcangelo — a historic abbey in Terra Murata with a small museum and a panoramic terrace.
  9. Punta Serra — a viewpoint on the island's western edge looking out toward Ischia, especially good at sunset.
  10. Via Roma — the harborside promenade in Marina Grande, a good spot to park and stroll among the pastel façades.

What do you need to rent a scooter in Procida?

For a 50cc scooter you need a category AM licence, which you can hold from age 14 in Italy. For anything between 50cc and 125cc you need category A1, though some rental shops also accept a full car (B) licence for 125cc machines — check this with the operator before you book. If your licence was issued outside the EU or EEA, bring an International Driving Permit as well. Rental companies generally set their own minimum age, usually 18, and will ask for a deposit, held on your credit card or in cash, scaled to the value of the scooter.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Procida?

Prices swing a lot with the season. In low season you can find a basic 50cc scooter from around 5 to 15 EUR per day, while high summer pushes rates up to 25-45 EUR per day, sometimes more on August weekends. Larger or newer 125cc+ scooters run 40-60 EUR per day at peak times.

  • Cheapest months: November to March, when demand drops and many shops offer their lowest daily rates.
  • Priciest months: July and August, when both heat and demand for a scooter rental in Procida peak together.

When to book a rental scooter in Procida?

If you can travel outside July and August, you'll pay noticeably less and have an easier time finding the model you want. Spring and early autumn also mean fewer crowds on the lanes down to Corricella and Chiaiolella. If your dates fall in high season, book well ahead — island scooters get snapped up fast in midsummer, and turning up without a reservation can mean settling for whatever's left.

Local traffic rules in Procida

Italy drives on the right, and helmets are compulsory for every rider and passenger, no exceptions by age. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on ordinary roads outside town, though a 50cc scooter is capped at 45 km/h in any case. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, dropping to zero if you've held your licence for less than three years. Keep your headlight on at all times, even in daylight — it's required for scooters and mopeds across Italy. If you want to rent a scooter in Procida, just use the search form at the top of the page.
