Acireale doesn't announce itself the way Taormina does. It sits a little back from the tourist trail, on a black-lava terrace overlooking the Riviera dei Ciclopi, and that's exactly what makes it worth exploring on four wheels rather than two feet. Rent a quad bike in Acireale and you can drop off the Timpa's cliffside switchbacks down to the little harbor of Santa Maria La Scala, then follow the coast to the fishing village of Aci Trezza, where the Ciclopi sea stacks rise straight out of the water. Nobody arrives here by bus.
The terrain is really what makes a quad the right call. The Timpa is a stack of lava terraces cut by tight, steep lanes that a rental car would struggle with and a scooter would find uncomfortable — a quad's short wheelbase and ground clearance handle the descents to the sea with none of the drama. From town you're also within easy striking distance of Etna's lava-field tracks and the coastal run north to Taormina, so a single rental can cover volcano, cliffs and coastline in one trip.
Road-legal quads in Italy are classed as quadricycles: lighter models can be ridden on a moped-level AM licence, while heavier or more powerful ones need at least a B1 or a full car licence — the rental company will tell you which class their machine falls into. If your licence was issued outside the EU/EEA, bring an International Driving Permit along with it. Most operators set their own minimum age, typically 18, and will ask for a deposit, usually as a credit card hold, scaled to the value of the vehicle.
Expect to pay 15-25 EUR per day in low season and 40-60 EUR per day in high season, with premium models running 60-90 EUR per day.
High season runs June through August, plus the Easter period, when the Riviera dei Ciclopi is busiest and prices sit at their highest. Low season stretches from November to March, with quieter roads and the cheapest rates of the year. For the best balance of good weather, open roads and easier availability, aim for May, June, September or early October — and if you're set on July or August, book well ahead, since coastal and island rentals fill up fast.
Italy drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for every rider and passenger on a quad bike, no exceptions, and dipped headlights should stay on at all times. Speed limits top out at 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on ordinary roads outside town — worth remembering on the open stretches toward Etna. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, dropping to zero for anyone under 21 or who has held a licence for less than three years.
