Salerno rarely gets top billing next to Naples or the Amalfi Coast itself, but it's the natural starting point for the drive everyone actually comes for. Climb out of town to the Castello di Arechi for a first sweep of the gulf, then point yourself east along the coastal road toward Vietri sul Mare, where the ceramics shops signal you've reached the edge of something spectacular. From there the famous hairpins begin, curling above the water toward Positano, and there's no better way to feel every one of them than on a quad.
This stretch of coast was built for slow, narrow, nimble machines, not for buses or wide sedans. The SS163 twists tightly along cliffs with pull-offs too small for a coach and viewpoints a rental car would sail straight past. A quad bike rental in Salerno lets you stop wherever the view demands it, duck into Vietri or up to Ravello on a whim, and still have the agility to handle the switchbacks up to Agerola or inland toward Cava de' Tirreni, where the roads are quieter and a car feels like overkill.
The licence you need depends on the machine: lighter quadricycles can be ridden on a moped-level AM licence, while heavier or more powerful models require at least a B1 or full car licence. Ask your operator which class their quads fall under before you book. EU and EEA licences are accepted as issued; if yours was issued outside the EU, bring an International Driving Permit along with it. Most rental companies set their own minimum age, usually 18, and will ask for a deposit — typically a credit card hold — plus a copy of your passport or ID.
Average rental price is around 15-25 EUR per day during low season and 40-70 EUR during high season, with larger or newer models running 70-100+ EUR a day at the July and August peak.
High season runs June through August, with July and August the busiest and priciest months on the coast. Low season stretches from November to March, when prices drop and some coastal outlets scale back hours. If you can, aim for May, June, September or early October — the roads are calmer, the heat is manageable, and rates sit well below the midsummer peak. For a summer trip, book your quad well ahead, since coastal availability tightens fast.
Italy drives on the right, and helmets are mandatory for every rider and passenger on a quad, no exceptions. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on ordinary roads outside town — plenty on the SS163's tight curves. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, dropping to zero for riders under 21 or with a licence held less than three years. Keep an eye out for ZTL restricted zones in historic centres like Ravello, since entering without a permit brings an automatic fine that can catch up with you months later.
