Taormina looks like it was built for postcards, not for cars. Cobbled lanes twist past Baroque balconies, the coast drops in tiers toward the sea, and Mount Etna smokes quietly in the background wherever you happen to be standing. The best way to actually catch all of it — the cliffside curve above Isola Bella, the switchbacks up to Castelmola, the framed sea view from the ancient theatre — is from a saddle, moving at your own pace, stopping wherever the light looks good.
Taormina's centre is compact but steep, and traffic backs up fast along the coastal road in season, which makes a car more of a burden than a convenience here. A bicycle slips through where cars can't and covers ground that's exhausting on foot. Go for an e-bike if you want the hillside villages and the Etna foothills without arriving everywhere out of breath — the assist turns Castelmola's climb from a slog into a pleasant half-hour, and it opens up longer loops toward the volcano that would otherwise be a car-only trip.
No licence is needed for a standard bicycle or a pedal-assist e-bike capped at 25 km/h and 250 W — these are treated as ordinary bicycles under Italian law, with no registration or insurance required. Rental shops set their own minimum age, and you'll usually just need photo ID and a card for the deposit, which scales with the value of the bike — expect a higher hold on e-bikes than on a basic city bike. An International Driving Permit isn't relevant here, since bicycles don't need a driving licence at all.
Prices start around EUR 3-8 per day in low season for a standard city bike, rising to roughly EUR 10-20 per day in high season. E-bikes and higher-spec road or mountain bikes run two to three times that, up to about EUR 25-30 per day, which covers the battery and the extra pull needed for climbs like Castelmola.
High season runs June through August, plus the Easter weeks, when Sicily's coast gets busiest and prices climb accordingly. Low season stretches from November to March, when many seasonal outlets along the coast cut back their hours or close altogether. For the best mix of good weather and manageable heat, aim for May, June, September or early October — you'll ride in comfort and pay less than in peak summer. If you're set on July or August, book your bike well ahead, since the good machines go first.
Italy drives on the right. Cycle helmets aren't legally required for adults, though they're a sensible idea on the descents around Mazzarò and Castelmola. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on ordinary roads outside town, figures worth keeping in mind if you're sharing the road with faster traffic on the coastal route. The blood-alcohol limit for drivers is 0.5 g/l, and zero for anyone under 21. After dark or in tunnels, cyclists need working lights and a reflective vest, so plan your ride home before the light fades over the sea.
