Picture the old town walls of Alghero catching the late sun while you glide the last stretch of promenade toward the beach, salt air in your face and the whole coastline still ahead of you. This is exactly the kind of afternoon a bicycle buys you here — freedom to stop wherever the light looks good, whether that's a quiet corner of the Bastioni or a swim break at Spiaggia delle Bombarde. Bike rental in Alghero opens up a coastline that on foot feels endless and by car feels like you're missing all of it.
Alghero rewards two wheels more than most Sardinian towns. The historic centre is small and mostly flat, so you can wander it without breaking a sweat, but the sights that make people fall for this place — the cliffs above Capo Caccia, the beaches strung along the coast road, the archaeological ruins near Fertilia — sit several kilometres out, too far to walk and a hassle to park for by car. A bike splits the difference: cheap, easy to leave anywhere, and perfectly suited to the gentle grades of the coastal route. Outside the busiest weeks of summer, traffic in and around town stays light, and the road out to Capo Caccia has enough width and shoulder to make the ride feel relaxed rather than technical.
Standard bicycles and pedal-assist e-bikes capped at 25 km/h need no licence or registration in Italy, so renting is straightforward — just photo ID. Rental shops set their own minimum age, and most ask for a deposit, usually held on a credit card, before handing over the bike. Faster or throttle-driven e-bikes are treated differently and may fall under moped rules, so check with the operator if you're after something quicker than a standard e-bike. Visitors from outside the EU don't need an International Driving Permit for a bicycle rental — that requirement only applies to motorised vehicles.
A standard bike typically runs EUR 3-8 per day in low season and EUR 10-20 per day in high season, while e-bikes and higher-end road or hybrid models sit around EUR 20-30 per day.
June through August is high season, when Alghero's beaches and old town fill up and rental prices sit at their highest — book ahead if you're travelling then. November to March is low season, with fewer visitors, lower rates, and some seasonal outlets running reduced hours or closing altogether. If you want warm weather without the crowds or the top prices, aim for May, June, September or early October.
Italy drives on the right. Adult cyclists aren't legally required to wear a helmet, though it's a sensible habit on the Capo Caccia road, where cars share the shoulder. General speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on roads outside town, so expect vehicles to be moving briskly once you're on the open coast road. The blood-alcohol limit for drivers is 0.5 g/l, and if you're riding after dusk or through a tunnel, Italian law requires working lights and reflectors, plus a reflective vest outside built-up areas. Most of our bike rentals in Alghero come from operators with years of local experience, offering a reliable bike and friendly service, so if you're ready to rent a bike in Alghero, just use the search form at the top of the page.
