Alghero rewards anyone willing to trade the bus timetable for a set of handlebars. Ride out along the coastal road toward Capo Caccia and you'll find the cliffs opening up over the Golfo di Porto Conte, with the Grotte di Nettuno waiting at the tip of the promontory. Come back through town and park along the old Catalan-Gothic streets inside the Bastioni, where the sea walls glow at sunset — the kind of ride that turns a single afternoon into the highlight of the trip.
Alghero's centro storico is largely closed to cars and short on parking, so a two-wheeler is simply the practical choice there. Outside the walls, the real appeal shows itself: the best sights are strung along narrow, twisting coastal roads — the run out to Capo Caccia, the cliff road to the lighthouse, the longer haul south to Bosa — where a scooter or motorcycle slips past tour buses and finds parking that a car never will. If you want to rent a scooter in Alghero or step up to something with more power for the longer routes, this is a city built for it.
For mopeds up to 50cc you need at least category AM; scooters between 50cc and 125cc call for category A1, and larger motorcycles step up through A2 to full A depending on power. A full car licence (category B) can cover a 125cc scooter in some cases, though rental operators vary in whether they accept a foreign B licence for this, so confirm before booking. If your licence was issued outside the EU/EEA, bring an International Driving Permit. Expect a minimum age requirement around 18, and a deposit taken as a credit card hold or cash, scaled to the value of the vehicle.
A scooter runs roughly 20–28 EUR per day in low season and 35–55 EUR per day in high season, while larger motorcycles (300cc+) climb to 50–90 EUR per day, and premium touring bikes can reach 70–120 EUR per day at the peak.
High season runs through June, July and August, with July and August the busiest and priciest stretch. Low season falls between November and March, when quieter roads come with lower rates but fewer open rental shops. For the best balance, aim for late spring or early autumn, when the coast roads are clear, the weather is kind, and vehicles are easier to find without booking far in advance.
Italy drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for every rider and passenger on a scooter, moped or motorcycle, no exceptions. Speed limits are 50 km/h in town, 90 km/h on ordinary roads outside built-up areas, and up to 110 km/h on extra-urban dual carriageways — 50cc mopeds are capped at 45 km/h and kept off the faster roads. Dipped headlights stay on at all times when riding. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, dropping to zero for riders under 21 or holding a licence less than three years. Most of our motorcycle rentals in Alghero come with a helmet, insurance and friendly service included — if you're ready to explore, just use the search form at the top of the page. Have a nice trip!
