Bergamo rewards anyone willing to leave the car behind. Ride up into Città Alta through the old Venetian Walls, catch your breath at the Piazza Vecchia, then climb further to the San Vigilio hill for a view over the whole plain. From there the Orobie Alps and Lago d'Iseo are barely an hour away, and a bike is what turns those distances into an afternoon adventure instead of a chore.
The old town sits on a hill laced with narrow, restricted-access streets where cars simply don't fit and parking is a headache even if they did. A bike slips through the lower city's traffic and climbs into Città Alta without a second thought. It's also the natural base for reaching the Orobie passes, the lake shore and the Franciacorta hills — roads built for switchbacks and curves, not straight lines, which is exactly where two wheels have the advantage.
The licence you need depends on the bike: category A1 covers scooters and motorcycles up to 125cc, while mid-power and unrestricted machines call for A2 or full category A. If your licence was issued outside the EU or EEA, bring an International Driving Permit along with it. Rental companies typically set their own minimum age, usually 18, and take a deposit — normally a credit card hold — scaled to the value of the bike, so a small scooter and a touring motorcycle won't ask for the same amount.
Expect to pay around 25–35 EUR per day in low season, rising to 40–60 EUR per day in high season, with premium touring models running 60–90 EUR per day or more.
High season runs June to August, when Alpine passes are fully open and prices sit at their peak — book a few weeks ahead if you want a specific model. Low season, November through February, is cheaper but many mountain routes are affected by winter conditions, so shoulder months like May, September and early October are often the sweet spot: mild weather, open passes and easier availability.
Italy drives on the right, and helmets are mandatory for every rider and passenger on mopeds, scooters and motorcycles, no exceptions. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas, 90 km/h on ordinary roads outside towns, and 110–130 km/h on faster extra-urban roads and motorways, with lower limits in the rain. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, dropping to zero for anyone who's held a licence less than three years. Keep your headlights on at all times, and watch for Città Alta's camera-enforced ZTL zone — riding in without a permit means a fine that catches up with you months later.
