Crema doesn't announce itself the way Rome or Florence do, and that's exactly the appeal. Cobbled streets fan out from the Duomo di Crema into farmland that stays flat for miles in every direction, so a morning ride can take you past the Santuario di Santa Maria della Croce and out along country roads before lunch. This is Lombardy at its quietest and most rewarding — wide skies, straight roads, and small towns that most visitors to Milan never see.
That flatness is the whole story. The Cremasco is built for a motorcycle: short, easy hops link Crema to Cremona, Lodi and Pandino with barely a hill in between, so you can string together two or three towns in a single afternoon without the traffic or fatigue you'd get on a bigger touring bike. In town, a bike slips easily through the narrow historic centre around Piazza del Duomo, and when you want more, the same machine happily stretches out toward Bergamo's hills or all the way into Milan.
The licence you need depends on the bike: category A1 covers machines up to 125cc, A2 handles mid-power motorcycles, and full category A is required for anything unrestricted. EU and EEA licences are accepted as issued, while licences from outside the EU need an International Driving Permit alongside them. Most rental operators in Crema set their own minimum age, typically 18 and up, and will ask for a deposit — usually a credit card hold sized to the value of the bike — plus a copy of your passport or ID.
Expect to pay around EUR 25–30 per day in low season, rising to EUR 40–55 per day in high season, with premium models running EUR 60–90 per day.
High season runs June through August, when demand and prices both peak across the region. Low season stretches from November to March, with the cheapest, quietest riding on offer. If you'd rather skip the crowds and the summer heat altogether, May, June, September and early October give you warm, dry days and easier availability without the midsummer price tag.
Italy drives on the right. Helmets are mandatory for every rider and passenger on a motorcycle, no exceptions by age. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas, 90 km/h on ordinary roads outside town, and 110–130 km/h on faster extra-urban roads and motorways. Dipped headlights must stay on at all times, day and night. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, dropping to zero for riders under 21 or who've held a licence for less than three years. Keep an eye out for ZTL restricted zones if you ride into any historic centre — entering without a permit brings an automatic fine.
