Ancona doesn't announce itself the way Rome or Florence do, and that's exactly the point. Base yourself here and within half an hour you're leaning into the curves of Parco del Conero, dropping down toward the beach cove at Portonovo, or climbing to the cliffside views over Sirolo. This is a region built for two wheels — a motorcycle turns those in-between roads into the actual destination.
The old town centre is tight, parking is scarce, and a car feels oversized the moment you leave the main roads. A motorcycle slips through all of that, then keeps going where cars can't: the switchbacks above the Adriatic, the tunnels through the Gola del Furlo, the hill roads up to Cingoli. Everything worth seeing — the coast, the gorges, the hilltop towns — sits 30 to 90 minutes out, which makes day loops the natural way to explore rather than long highway slogs.
The licence you need depends on the bike: category A1 covers scooters and motorcycles up to 125cc, A2 covers mid-power machines, and full category A is required for anything unrestricted. Some rental companies also accept a car (B) licence for 125cc bikes, but that's operator-dependent, so confirm before booking. If your licence wasn't issued in the EU or EEA, bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with it. Most operators set their own minimum age, usually 18, and will ask for a deposit, normally held on a credit card, scaled to the value of the bike.
Expect around 25-35 EUR per day for a scooter or small-displacement bike in low season, rising to 45-70 EUR per day for mid-size motorcycles in high season. Larger touring or premium models can run 80-150 EUR per day at peak times.
July and August are the busiest and priciest months, when the Conero coast fills up with summer traffic. If you'd rather ride in comfort, May, June, September and early October give you warm, dry weather with far less congestion and easier availability. Low season runs from November through March, when prices drop but some smaller outlets scale back their hours. Either way, book a few weeks ahead if you're travelling in summer.
Italy drives on the right. Helmets are mandatory for every rider and passenger, no exceptions, and dipped headlights must stay on at all times, day and night. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas, 90 km/h on ordinary roads outside town, and 110 km/h on main extra-urban dual carriageways; 50cc mopeds are capped at 45 km/h and can't use motorways. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, dropping to zero for riders under 21 or with less than three years on their licence. Watch for ZTL zones in historic centres — ride into one without a permit and the fine catches up with you later, plus an admin fee from the rental company.
