Oristano doesn't feel like a place to rush through by car. The old town is small and walkable, but the real reward starts once you roll past it — along flat lanes toward the Stagno di Santa Giusta lagoon, or out to the marina at Torre Grande, where a 16th-century Spanish watchtower still stands guard over the water. Pedal a little further and you reach the Sinis Peninsula, a stretch of wind-swept coast where beaches, lagoons and Phoenician ruins sit just a few kilometres apart. This is a corner of Sardinia that rewards a slower pace, and a bicycle happens to be exactly the right speed for it.

What makes Oristano so well suited to two wheels is its geography. The city and the Sinis Peninsula are almost entirely flat, with little of the traffic you'd find in Cagliari or Alghero, and the distances between sights — beaches, lagoons, archaeological ruins — typically run 15 to 25 km, too far to walk comfortably but a natural range for a bike. Unlike a car or scooter, a bicycle also gets you down the unpaved lanes that thread along the lagoons and onto beach access points that were never built with parking in mind. If you want to rent a bike in Oristano, this is the kind of town where that decision pays off almost immediately.

Top 10 things to see in Oristano by bike

  1. Torre di Mariano II (Torre di Portixedda) — a 14th-century medieval tower right in central Oristano, an easy warm-up ride before you head out of town.
  2. Basilica di Santa Giusta — a Romanesque-Pisan basilica overlooking the Stagno di Santa Giusta lagoon, a short flat ride south of the city.
  3. Torre Grande — Oristano's seafront marina, with a 16th-century Spanish watchtower and a long promenade, a popular base for coastal rides.
  4. Sinis Peninsula — flat, wind-swept lanes linking beaches, lagoons and archaeological sites, the classic Oristano bike loop.
  5. Spiaggia di Is Arutas — the famous quartz-grain beach on the Sinis coast, and one of the best reasons to bring a bike.
  6. Tharros — a Phoenician-Roman-Punic site at the tip of the peninsula, reached along a scenic coastal road.
  7. Chiesa di San Giovanni di Sinis — one of Sardinia's oldest surviving churches, dating to the 5th-6th century, on the way to Tharros.
  8. San Salvatore di Sinis — a small village with an underground pagan-Christian sanctuary, also known as a 1960s spaghetti-western film set.
  9. Stagno di Cabras — Sardinia's largest lagoon, ringed by flat roads that are good for birdwatching stops.
  10. Capo San Marco — a headland and lighthouse just past Tharros, with sweeping views over the Gulf of Oristano.

What do you need to rent a bike in Oristano?

None of this requires a licence. Standard bicycles and pedal-assist e-bikes up to 25 km/h and 250 W are treated as ordinary bicycles in Italy, with no registration or insurance needed. Faster or throttle-driven e-bikes are the exception — those count as mopeds and follow different rules. Rental shops set their own minimum age and will usually ask for photo ID, and most will take a deposit to cover the vehicle, so bring a card. No International Driving Permit is needed for a standard bike rental.

How much does it cost to rent a bike in Oristano?

Expect to pay 3-6 EUR per day in low season, rising to 10-18 EUR per day in high season. Premium models, such as e-bikes for tackling the wind on the Sinis lanes, run 18-25 EUR per day.

  • Prices are lowest from November to March.
  • They climb steadily through spring and peak in July and August.
  • Booking a few days ahead in summer helps you avoid the smaller shops selling out of bikes.

When to book a rental bike in Oristano?

High season runs June to August, with July and August the busiest and most expensive months on this coast. Low season stretches from November through March, when prices drop but some seasonal outlets close or cut their hours. If you can, aim for May, June, September or early October — the weather is still warm and dry, the Sinis lanes are quieter, and prices sit well below the midsummer peak.

Local traffic rules in Oristano

Italy drives on the right. Adult cyclists aren't legally required to wear a helmet, though it's sensible on the coastal roads out to Tharros. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on ordinary roads outside town, though on the quiet lanes around the Sinis Peninsula you'll rarely need to think about them on a bike. If you're riding at dusk, in poor visibility, through tunnels or outside built-up areas at night, Italian law requires working lights and reflectors, plus a reflective vest or jacket. The blood-alcohol limit for drivers is 0.5 g/l, effectively zero for anyone under 21 or in their first three years of holding a licence — worth keeping in mind if your trip mixes cycling with driving.
