Lago Maggiore looks different from a saddle. Pedal out of Stresa along the lakefront and the Borromean Islands drift past on your right, the water flat and silver in the morning light before the day-trippers arrive. Ten minutes from your hotel you can be standing at the ferry dock for Isola Bella, its baroque gardens rising in terraces straight out of the lake, or freewheeling south past the gates of Villa Pallavicino with nowhere in particular to be. This is the kind of place a bike was made for.
Stresa's old town is small, flat and largely closed to fast traffic, so you can cover it in minutes rather than fighting for parking near the piers. A bike also opens up the rest of the lake: the road north to Baveno and Verbania is an easy, scenic ride along the water, while stronger legs can turn the outing into something bigger with the climb up Monte Mottarone. Outside the busiest summer weekends, local roads stay quiet enough that you'll mostly be sharing them with other cyclists.
No licence is required for a standard bicycle or a pedal-assist e-bike capped at 25 km/h — they're treated as ordinary bicycles under Italian law. Rental shops usually ask for photo ID and a passport or credit card as a deposit, and set their own minimum age, so bring a form of ID with you. Faster, throttle-driven e-bikes are classed differently and may require the paperwork of a moped, so check with the operator if you're after real speed.
A basic city bike runs EUR 3–8 per day in low season, rising to EUR 12–20 per day in high season, with e-bikes typically EUR 25–40 per day. If you want a quality e-bike or road bike, expect EUR 30–45 per day.
July and August are Stresa's high season, with warm weather, full ferries and the highest prices — book ahead if you're travelling then. Low season runs November to March, when many outlets nearby reduce hours but rates on a bike rental in Stresa drop accordingly. For the best balance, aim for May, June, September or early October: mild days, thinner crowds, and rates well below the midsummer peak.
Italy drives on the right. Adult cyclists aren't legally required to wear a helmet, though it's sensible on the Mottarone descent. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on ordinary roads outside town, figures that matter mainly if you're sharing the road with scooters and cars. The blood-alcohol limit for drivers is 0.5 g/l, stricter for newer licence holders. If you're heading out at dusk or through a tunnel on the way to Baveno, working lights and a reflective vest are required by law.
