Trade the school run for the Sierra. Point a rented motorcycle north from Tres Cantos and you can be threading the granite boulders of La Pedriza or coasting the lakeside road around the Embalse de Santillana before your coffee gets cold. This is a town built for commuters, but on two wheels it turns into a launchpad — fast on one side into Madrid's Puerta del Sol and Gran Vía, and quick on the other into some of the best curves the Sierra de Guadarrama has to offer.
What makes Tres Cantos work so well for a motorcycle is the geography itself. It sits about 25 km from central Madrid, close enough for an easy evening ride in for dinner or nightlife, yet also right at the doorstep of the mountains. The roads are fast and largely free of the gridlock you'd hit further into the city, and parking a bike is painless where a car would mean circling the block. Distances here are too long to walk and too spread out for a bicycle to cover comfortably in a day, but they're exactly right for a motorcycle — which is why so many riders based around Madrid choose to rent a motorcycle in Tres Cantos rather than in the city centre itself.
The licence you need depends on the machine. An A1 licence covers bikes up to 125 cc from age 16; A2 covers restricted-power motorcycles from 18; a full A licence, for anything unrestricted, requires either two years on A2 or direct access at 24. If your licence isn't from the EU/EEA, bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home licence — most rental desks will ask for it. Rental companies typically set their own minimum age, often 18 or 21 depending on the bike, and you should expect a deposit blocked on a credit card in your name.
Average rental prices run from 25-30 EUR per day in low season up to 40-55 EUR per day in high season, with premium models reaching 60-90 EUR per day.
High season runs through July and August, plus Easter week, and it's worth booking ahead if you're travelling then. Low season stretches from November to March, with the best combination of mild weather and light traffic usually falling in May-June and September-October — a smart window if you want good riding conditions without high-season prices.
Spain drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for riders and passengers on mopeds and motorcycles at all times, on all roads, and motorcycles must run with dipped headlights day and night. Speed limits are 120 km/h on motorways, 90 km/h on conventional roads, and 50 km/h in built-up areas, dropping to 30 km/h on narrow single-lane urban streets. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, lowered to 0.3 g/l for riders with less than two years' experience. Handheld phones and headphones are off-limits while riding.
