Lleida rarely makes the first page of anyone's Spain itinerary, and that's exactly why riders love it. Swap the car for two wheels here and the reward is immediate: the plains around the city open onto the pre-Pyrenees within an hour, and roads like the Congost de Mont-rebei gorge or the switchbacks up to Port del Comte turn a simple transfer into the best part of the trip. Climb up to the Seu Vella at sunset first, though — the old cathedral sits on a hill above the city and gives you the whole Segrià plain laid out below before you head for the mountains.
This is big, thinly populated territory, and that's precisely what suits a motorcycle. The Segrià plain south of the city is fast and flat, but the real distances are north, where villages are small, parking is tight, and roads twist through valleys that a car simply can't enjoy the same way. A bike closes those gaps quickly, slots into a village square without a second thought, and lets you follow a mountain pass at its own pace rather than yours. If you want to rent a motorcycle in Lleida, this is where a bike earns its keep over four wheels.
The licence you need depends on the bike. An A1 licence covers machines up to 125cc and is available from age 16; A2 covers restricted-power motorcycles from 18; a full A licence, for anything unrestricted, requires either two years on A2 or direct access at 24. If you're travelling on a non-EU licence, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it — most rental desks will ask for it. Rental companies generally set their own minimum age, often 18 or 21 regardless of what the law allows, and will block a deposit on a credit card in your name, with the amount varying by bike class.
Expect to pay around 25-35 EUR per day for a scooter or small 125cc-class motorcycle in low season, rising to 40-60 EUR in high season. Larger touring motorcycles run from 70 to 120 EUR per day.
High season runs July and August, plus Easter week, when demand and prices both peak — book a few weeks ahead if you're travelling then. Low season stretches from November to March, with the lowest rates and the easiest availability. For the best combination of quiet roads and fair prices, aim for late spring or early autumn, when the Pyrenean passes are clear but the summer crowds haven't arrived.
Spain drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger on every moped and motorcycle, at all times, and dipped headlights must stay on day and night. Speed limits are 120 km/h on motorways, 90 km/h on conventional roads, and 50 km/h in built-up areas, dropping further on narrow urban streets. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, cut to 0.3 g/l for riders with less than two years' experience. Once you've got the paperwork sorted, use the search form at the top of the page to rent a motorcycle in Lleida and start planning the route north. Have a nice trip!
