Girona rewards anyone willing to leave the car behind. Cross the Onyar into the Barri Vell at dawn, catch the pastel houses reflected in still water, then climb the cathedral's famous stairs before the day-trippers arrive. From there the real fun starts: a scooter or motorcycle carries you out past the old walls and into the Costa Brava and the Empordà plain in minutes, no parking hunt required. Head for the coast road toward Palamós and Calella de Palafrugell, or point north for the twisting climb to Cadaqués and the wind-battered cliffs of Cap de Creus — a ride that feels earned by the time you park.
The old town's cobbled lanes are mostly closed to cars, and parking near the centre is scarce even for locals, so a bike simply gets you closer to where you actually want to be. The same goes for the villages scattered across the province — Besalú, Pals, Peratallada — their tight stone streets and tiny squares were never built with car traffic in mind. Once you're outside town, the region turns into some of Catalonia's best riding country: forested switchbacks, mountain monasteries, and coastal corners a car would only crawl past.
For a moped up to 50cc, an AM licence covers you (or any full car licence). A 125cc scooter needs an A1 licence — the Spanish rule letting category-B holders ride 125cc after three years only applies inside Spain, so most non-EU visitors will need an actual motorcycle licence. Bigger machines follow the usual EU ladder: A1 from 16, A2 from 18, full A access later. If your licence isn't from the EU, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it, since rental desks routinely ask for one. Rental companies typically set their own minimum age, often 18 or 21 depending on the bike, and will block a deposit on your credit card before handing over the keys.
Prices move with the Costa Brava's tourist calendar. Expect EUR 25–35 per day in low season, rising to roughly EUR 45–70 per day in high season, with premium or larger-displacement bikes reaching EUR 70–100+ per day at peak times.
High season runs through July and August, when the coast fills up and prices climb accordingly. Low season stretches from November to March, with quieter roads and the lowest daily rates, though some smaller operators trim their fleets in the depths of winter. If you'd rather skip both the crowds and the premium pricing, May, June, September and October hit a comfortable middle ground — still warm enough for a coastal ride, without the August traffic.
Spain drives on the right. Helmets are mandatory for riders and passengers on any moped or motorcycle, on every road, at all times, and daytime headlights must stay on. Speed limits top out at 90 km/h on regular roads and drop to 50 km/h in town, falling further to 30 km/h or 20 km/h on narrow single-lane urban streets; mopeds are capped at 45 km/h and can't use the motorways. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, tightened to 0.3 g/l for riders with under two years of experience. Handheld phones and headphones are off-limits while riding.
