Picture the long, wind-carved spine of Fuerteventura opening up ahead of you, tarmac curling toward mountain passes with barely another vehicle in sight. A motorcycle turns this island from a place you pass through into one you actually feel — the sand drifting in from the Parque Natural de Corralejo dunes, the salt spray at the Faro de El Cotillo, the hush of a village square in Betancuria where the only sound is your engine cooling down. This is what makes people **rent a motorcycle in Fuerteventura** rather than book a coach tour: you choose the pace, and the island rewards it.
Fuerteventura is thin and stretched out, strung along one main road, the FV-2/FV-1, that links towns sitting far apart with almost nothing in between. A car struggles to park in the narrow lanes of Betancuria or Pájara, while a motorcycle slips through easily and covers real distance without the hassle. Traffic thins out fast once you leave Corralejo or Costa Calma, the tarmac is generally in good condition, and the island's whole character — dunes, mountain miradores, coastal cliffs — is built for riding slowly and stopping often, not racing from A to B.
Note that the final stretch to Cofete runs on unpaved, rough track, so it suits a proper motorcycle better than a scooter — riders on smaller bikes may want to stop just short and admire the view from there.
For bikes up to 125cc you'll need an A1 licence; anything larger requires an A2 or full A category, depending on power output. Most rental companies here set their own minimum age, typically 18 or 21, and will ask that you've held your licence for a minimum period. Visitors travelling on a non-EU licence should bring an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence, since desks commonly ask for it. Expect a deposit blocked on a credit card in your name — the exact amount depends on the model you choose.
Our standard listing sits at around 25 EUR per day, comfortably inside the typical low-season range of 20-28 EUR. In high season, daily rates climb to roughly 35-50 EUR, and larger-cc motorcycles or premium scooters over 125cc run higher still, from about 45-70 EUR per day.
Unlike mainland Spain, the Canary Islands run rentals year-round, and the northern winter is actually their busy season — so don't assume January is quiet here the way it is elsewhere. If you're travelling in July, August or over the festive period, book ahead, since prices climb and availability tightens. Aim for November or the early spring months if you'd rather ride the same roads for less.
Spain drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger on any moped or motorcycle, on every road, at all times. Speed limits top out at 120 km/h on motorways, dropping to 90 km/h on regular roads and 50 km/h in towns, with narrower urban lanes capped at 30 km/h. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, tightened to 0.3 g/l for riders with under two years of experience. Dipped headlights are required day and night, and handheld phones or headphones are off-limits while riding.
