Figueres rewards a rider more than most towns on the Costa Brava. Park your bike outside the Teatre-Museu Dalí, wander its surreal courtyard, and within half an hour you can be climbing the hills toward Cadaqués, or crossing flat farmland to the ramparts of a fortress the size of a small city. Few places pack this much variety — coast, countryside, medieval stone, and one very strange museum — into rides you can finish in an afternoon.

What makes Figueres such a natural base for two wheels is the geography itself: the Empordà plain spreads wide and flat around the city, with the Dalí Triangle, whitewashed fishing villages and the Costa Brava coastline all sitting 30 to 60 minutes away. These distances are too spread out to cover on foot, but a motorcycle or scooter handles them far better than a car, especially on the narrow, switchbacking road up to Cadaqués and Cap de Creus, where a car queue can turn a scenic drive into a slow crawl. Traffic stays light outside the busiest summer weeks, and parking a bike in the old towns is simple where a car would struggle to find a spot at all.

Top 10 things to see in Figueres by motorcycle

  1. Teatre-Museu Dalí — Figueres' own Dalí museum, the natural starting and finishing point for any ride around the area.
  2. Castell de Sant Ferran — one of Europe's largest bastioned fortresses, just minutes from the centre, with wide ramparts made for exploring on foot once you park up.
  3. Cadaqués — reached via the winding GIP-6041 over the hills, this whitewashed bay town is the classic Costa Brava motorcycle route.
  4. Cap de Creus — a rocky cape and lighthouse past Cadaqués, with a twisting access road and the best coastal viewpoint for miles.
  5. Casa-Museu Salvador Dalí, Portlligat — Dalí's home on a quiet cove just beyond Cadaqués, reached along the same scenic approach.
  6. Roses — a beach town on the Gulf of Roses, an easy, flat ride from Figueres and ideal for a shorter loop.
  7. Empúries, L'Escala — Greco-Roman ruins set right on the coast, at the end of a pleasant run through the Empordà plain.
  8. Besalú — a medieval fortified bridge and old town inland, a favourite half-day ride through the Garrotxa countryside.
  9. Castell Gala Dalí, Púbol — the third stop on the Dalí Triangle, tucked among quiet inland Empordà villages.
  10. Peratallada — one of Catalonia's best-preserved medieval villages, often paired with Púbol on the same loop.

What do you need to rent a motorcycle in Figueres?

Requirements depend on engine size. Mopeds up to 50cc need an AM licence (minimum age 15 in Spain), and a full car licence also covers them. For a 125cc scooter you'll generally need an A1 motorcycle licence — the alternative route through a long-held car licence only applies inside Spain, so it won't help most visitors. Larger machines step up through A2 and A licence categories. If your licence isn't from the EU/EEA, bring an International Driving Permit along with your home licence, since rental desks commonly ask for both. Expect rental companies to set their own minimum age, often 18 or 21, and to hold a deposit on a credit card in your name.

How much does it cost to rent a motorcycle in Figueres?

A scooter runs about 25–30 EUR per day in low season, rising to 40–60 EUR per day in July and August. Larger-cc motorcycles or premium models can reach 70–100 EUR or more per day at the height of summer.

  • Cheapest: November to March.
  • Most expensive: July and August.
  • Spring and autumn sit somewhere in between.

When to book a rental motorcycle in Figueres?

High season runs through July and August, when demand and prices both peak along this stretch of the Costa Brava. Low season stretches from November to March, with the lowest prices of the year. If you want the best of both worlds — good weather without the crowds or the July–August rates — May, June, September and October are the sweet spot, and it's worth booking a little ahead once summer approaches.

Local traffic rules in Figueres

Spain drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for riders and passengers on mopeds and motorcycles at all times, on every road. Speed limits top out at 90 km/h on conventional roads and drop to 50 km/h in built-up areas, with mopeds capped at 45 km/h and barred from motorways. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, tightened to 0.3 g/l for riders with less than two years' experience. Dipped headlights are mandatory day and night on motorcycles and mopeds, and handheld phones or headphones are off-limits while riding.
