Bilbao's steep hills and tight estuary streets are best seen from a saddle, and there's no better base for that than Basauri. Rent a motorcycle here and you can be parked below the titanium curves of the Museo Guggenheim Bilbao within fifteen minutes, wander the arcades of Casco Viejo, then turn the same afternoon into a coastal escape past the Puente Colgante toward Getxo. Few cities in the Basque Country pack this much variety — museum, old town, cliffs, mountains — into such a short ride.
Basauri sits inside Greater Bilbao, where traffic bunches up fast and parking near the centre is scarce, so two wheels beat a car or the metro for reaching both the city and its surroundings. From here you're equally close to the coast at Sopelana and Bakio and to the twisting passes of Gorbeia and Urkiola, most of it within fifteen to forty-five minutes. A rented bike lets you string city sightseeing and countryside riding into one easy day, something public transport simply can't do.
For scooters up to 50cc you'll need at least an AM licence (or a full category B licence), while a 125cc scooter or motorcycle requires an A1 licence — from age 16 — and larger machines step up through A2 and A. If your licence isn't from the EU/EEA, bring an International Driving Permit along with your home licence, since rental desks commonly ask for it. Most companies set their own minimum age, often 18 or 21, and will block a deposit on your credit card before handing over the keys.
Expect around 25-35 EUR per day for a small-to-midsize bike or scooter in low season, rising to 40-60 EUR in high season; larger touring or premium motorcycles run 70-120 EUR per day.
High season runs through July and August, plus Easter week, when demand — and prices — peak. Low season stretches from November to March, with the cheapest rates of the year. If you'd rather skip both crowds and winter chill, May, June, September and October offer the best riding weather at gentler prices.
Spain drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for riders and passengers on mopeds and motorcycles at all times, and motorcycles must run with dipped headlights day and night. Speed limits top out at 120 km/h on motorways, 90 km/h on conventional roads, and 50 km/h in town, dropping further on single-lane urban streets; mopeds are capped at 45 km/h and can't use motorways. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, tightened to 0.3 g/l for riders with under two years' experience.
Once you've got the essentials sorted, just use the search form at the top of the page to rent a motorcycle in Basauri. Have a nice trip!
