Picture swapping the tour bus for a motorcycle and heading straight into the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park, where volcanic cliffs drop into coves that most rental cars never reach. One morning you're winding along the lighthouse road above the coastline; the next you're crossing the Tabernas Desert, Europe's only true desert and the backdrop for dozens of old spaghetti westerns. If you want to rent a motorcycle in Almería, this is exactly the kind of trip it opens up.
Almería's best sights sit far apart, connected by quiet rural roads with almost no traffic — a landscape built for two wheels. Coastal tracks around Cabo de Gata narrow to gravel in places, village streets in San José or La Isleta del Moro barely fit a car, and parking in the old town is its own headache. A bike slips through all of it, which is why motorcycle rental in Almería makes more sense here than in most Spanish cities.
For anything up to 125 cc, an A1 licence covers you from age 16; larger machines need an A2 (from 18) or full A licence. Most non-EU visitors should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence, since rental desks commonly ask for it. Expect the rental company to set its own minimum age, often 18 or 21 depending on the bike, and to block a deposit on a credit card in your name — the amount varies by vehicle class.
A small-to-midsize scooter or motorcycle runs around 25 EUR per day in low season, rising to roughly 40-60 EUR per day at the height of summer. Larger-displacement or premium models can cost 70-120 EUR per day or more, especially in July and August.
July and August draw the most visitors and the best riding weather, so book ahead if you're travelling then — prices and demand both peak. For lighter crowds and lower rates, November to February is the low season, though cooler, wetter days are more likely. Many riders find spring and early autumn the sweet spot for comfortable temperatures without summer prices.
Spain drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for riders and passengers on mopeds and motorcycles at all times, and dipped headlights must stay on day and night. Speed limits top out at 90 km/h on conventional roads and drop to 50 km/h in built-up areas, with lower limits on narrow urban streets. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, reduced to 0.3 g/l for riders with less than two years' experience — and handheld phones or headphones are off-limits while riding.
