Vicenza rewards anyone willing to look past its train-station approach: a walled Renaissance city where Palladio's porticoes open onto quiet piazzas, with vineyard-striped hills starting almost at the edge of town. Climb to the Basilica di Monte Berico for a view over the terracotta rooftops, or take the lane out to La Rotonda, Palladio's most photographed villa, and you will understand why this small city earned a spot on the UNESCO list. A scooter is what turns those separate errands into one easy afternoon.
The historic center itself is compact and mostly closed to cars, so you will end up parking at the edge and walking the last stretch anyway — but everything worth reaching beyond the walls sits just out of comfortable walking range. The Berici hills roll south in gentle curves rather than steep switchbacks, ideal for a scooter rather than a car that needs to hunt for parking at every stop. If you want to rent a scooter in Vicenza, this is exactly the kind of city where two wheels beat four: quick to park, quick to thread through, and just fast enough to link the villas, the lake and a day trip to Bassano without losing the morning to logistics.
For a 50cc moped capped at 45 km/h, an AM category licence is enough. Anything from 50cc up to 125cc calls for an A1 licence; some rental operators will also accept a full car (B) licence for a 125cc scooter, but this varies, so confirm before you book. If your licence was issued outside the EU/EEA, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it. Most operators set their own minimum age, typically 18, and will ask for a deposit — usually a credit card hold sized to the vehicle's value — plus a copy of your ID or passport.
A basic 50cc scooter runs roughly 5-15 EUR per day in low season and 20-40 EUR per day in high season. Newer or larger machines, 125cc and up, can reach 50-60 EUR per day at the peak.
May, June, September and early October give you warm, dry days without the midsummer crowds or the highest rates — a sweet spot for riding the Berici hills comfortably. July and August bring both the highest prices and the least comfortable midday heat for riding, so if you're set on a summer trip, book ahead. Winter is quieter and cheaper, though some smaller outlets scale back their hours.
Italy drives on the right. Helmets are mandatory for every rider and passenger on a scooter, no exceptions by age. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas, 90 km/h on ordinary roads outside town, and 110 km/h on the main extra-urban routes; a 50cc moped is capped at 45 km/h and can't use motorways or main dual carriageways. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, dropping to zero if you've held your licence less than three years. Dipped headlights stay on at all times, and watch for ZTL camera zones around the historic center — entering without a permit brings a fine weeks later.
