Skip the water taxi queue and take the barrier islands at your own pace. Once you cross to the Lido di Venezia, the car-free rule that governs central Venice disappears, and a scooter turns a strip of beach town into your own coastline — ride the promenade, then duck inland to Malamocco, a fishing village so quiet you'll forget Piazza San Marco is twenty minutes away by ferry.
Venice's historic center is boats and bridges only, so a scooter is never the answer there — but the lagoon's edges are a different story. The Lido, Jesolo and the mainland around Mestre have real roads and real distances, too far to walk, too short to bother with a car, which is exactly the gap a scooter fills. If you want to rent a scooter in Venice, this is where it earns its keep.
For a 50cc moped you'll need at least category AM; scooters up to 125cc call for category A1, and Italy does allow full car (B) licence holders to ride a 125cc under certain conditions — but not every rental operator accepts a foreign B licence for this, so check before you book. Riders on a non-EU licence should also carry an International Driving Permit. Most operators set a minimum age around 18 and take a deposit as a credit card hold, scaled to the value of the bike, along with a copy of your passport or ID.
Expect roughly 5–15 EUR per day in low season, rising to 20–35 EUR per day at the height of summer, with premium models running 35–50 EUR per day.
High season runs June through August, plus the Easter weeks, when island and coastal outlets fill up fast and prices climb toward that 35 EUR ceiling — book ahead if you're arriving then. Low season stretches from November to March, when many seasonal rental points on the coast scale back or close, but that's also when a scooter rental in Venice is at its cheapest. May, June, September and early October split the difference: warm, far less crowded, and easier to book on short notice.
Italy drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for every rider and passenger on a scooter, moped or motorcycle, no exceptions, and headlights stay on at all times once you're on two wheels. Speed limits top out at 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on open roads outside town; a 50cc moped is capped at 45 km/h and can't use dual carriageways or motorways. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, dropping to zero for anyone under 21 or holding a licence less than three years. One more thing worth knowing: central Venice and other historic centers are protected by camera-enforced ZTL zones, and riding into one without a permit means a fine that can catch up with you months later, plus an admin fee from the rental company.
