Mairena del Aljarafe won't demand much from you, and that's the appeal. Pick up a scooter and you can be gliding along the botanical trail at Parque Periurbano de Porzuna within minutes, or following the flat riverside path of the Corredor Verde del Río Pudio toward the neighbouring villages. Head the other direction and central Seville — Plaza de España, the Guadalquivir — is barely a quarter of an hour away.
This is a plateau town built for wide, easy roads rather than the tangled lanes of Seville's old quarter, so a scooter clears the distances without any of the congestion you'd hit in a car. It also means you can wander off toward smaller Aljarafe towns that buses barely touch, then be back in the historic centre for the afternoon — freedom that public transport here just doesn't offer.
For a 50cc moped you'll need an AM licence, or any full car licence covers it too. For a 125cc scooter, EU visitors with a category B licence held at least three years are covered within Spain, but most non-EU visitors will need an A1 motorcycle licence instead. Rental desks usually set their own minimum age, often 18 or 21, and ask for a deposit blocked on a credit card in your name. If your licence isn't from the EU, bring an International Driving Permit along with your home licence — most operators will ask for it.
Prices run from 5 to 8 EUR per day in low season, up to 12 to 18 EUR in high season, with premium models around 20 to 25 EUR per day.
If you're after the lowest prices, aim for November through February. Book ahead for July and August, and around Easter week and the Feria de Abril, when demand across the Seville area peaks and the best scooters go quickly. May, June, September and October tend to offer a comfortable middle ground — mild weather and easier availability.
Spain drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for riders and passengers on mopeds and scooters at all times, on every road. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas, dropping to 30 km/h on single-lane urban roads, and mopeds are capped at 45 km/h and barred from motorways. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, lowered to 0.3 g/l if you've held your licence less than two years. Headlights must stay on, day and night, and handheld phones or headphones are off-limits while riding.
