León's old town rewards a slow walk, but the real magic of this corner of Castile and León happens once you roll past the city limits. Pick up a motorcycle here and the Picos de Europa, the forested passes of El Bierzo, and the Camino de Santiago's high point at Cruz de Ferro all turn into a single afternoon's ride. One day you're parked outside the Catedral de León with its glowing stained glass, the next you're leaning through curves above the Riaño reservoir with the mountains opening up in front of you.
This is exactly the kind of place a motorcycle makes sense. The old town itself is compact enough to cover on foot, but everything that makes León worth a longer stay — Riaño, the Ancares mountains, Astorga, Babia y Luna — sits somewhere between 100 and 160 km round trip. That's too far and too winding to enjoy properly by car, and well beyond what you'd want to cover on a bicycle. A rented motorcycle turns León into a base camp: sleep in the old town, ride out to the mountains by day.
The licence you need depends on the size of the bike. Machines up to 125cc call for an A1 licence (available from age 16); anything more powerful requires an A2 or full A category. If you're travelling from outside the EU, bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home licence — most rental desks in León will ask for it. Rental companies typically set their own minimum age, often 18 or 21 depending on the vehicle, and you should expect to leave a deposit blocked on a credit card in your name.
A small scooter or 125cc bike runs 20-25 EUR per day in low season, while mid-size motorcycles climb to 35-55 EUR per day in high season. If you want a larger touring or adventure bike for the mountain routes, expect 60-90+ EUR per day.
July and August are León's high season, when demand and prices both peak, so booking a few weeks ahead is wise if you're travelling then. From November to February, low season keeps prices at their lowest, though some mountain routes may be colder and less inviting. Many riders find May-June and September-October the sweet spot — mild weather, thinner crowds, and prices closer to the low-season end.
Spain drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger on any moped or motorcycle, at all times, and motorcycles must run with dipped headlights day and night. Speed limits top out at 120 km/h on motorways, drop to 90 km/h on conventional roads — the kind you'll spend most of your day on around Riaño and El Bierzo — and fall to 50 km/h in built-up areas. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, tightened to 0.3 g/l for riders with less than two years' experience. Handheld phones and headphones are off-limits while riding.

When you make an online motorbike reservation you can also order the following extra services and equipment: integral helmet, GPS navigation, intercom, unlimited mileage, top case, side cases, boots, jacket, gloves, individual guide or tour, map, full insurance, one-way rental, or delivery to your chosen address.
