The Aeolian Islands were made for exactly this kind of exploring, and nowhere more than Lipari. Picture yourself climbing the switchbacks toward Belvedere Quattrocchi just before sunset, the Faraglioni rock stacks glowing orange against the sea, Vulcano steaming quietly in the distance. Or freewheeling down to Marina Corta for a granita after a morning at Spiaggia Bianca. A scooter turns Lipari from a place you pass through into a place you actually cover — every cove, quarry and hilltop hamlet within easy reach.
Lipari's ring road runs barely 30 km end to end, but it's narrow, twisty, and often short on parking in town — a car feels oversized here almost immediately. A scooter slips through the hairpins on the climb to Quattrocchi, tucks into a gap outside a café in Canneto, and gets you around the whole island in a single unhurried day. If you're weighing up scooter rental in Lipari against renting a car, the scooter wins on every count except rain.
For a 50cc moped, an AM category licence covers you; anything from 50cc up to 125cc needs an A1 licence. Some operators will accept a full car (B) licence for a 125cc scooter, but this isn't guaranteed for visitors, so confirm it when you book. If your licence was issued outside the EU/EEA, bring an International Driving Permit. Rental shops in Lipari generally expect riders to be 18 or over, and you'll leave a deposit — usually a card hold — sized to the scooter you're taking.
Expect around 15-20 EUR per day in low season, rising to roughly 35-50 EUR per day in July and August. A newer or larger 125-150cc scooter runs closer to 50-70 EUR per day. Our own listings start from 5 EUR per day, undercutting the typical low-season rate.
If you can travel outside July and August, do — May, June, September and early October give you warm, dry weather, thinner crowds and better rates without the peak-season scramble. If you're set on a summer trip, book your scooter hire in Lipari well ahead, since the island's small size means availability tightens fast once the season gets going.
Italy drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for every rider and passenger, no exceptions. Built-up areas are capped at 50 km/h, and a 50cc moped can't exceed 45 km/h or use faster dual carriageways — not that you'll need to on an island this size. Dipped headlights stay on at all times, day and night. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, dropping to zero if you've held your licence for less than three years. Ride within these limits and Lipari's roads are a genuine pleasure.
