Picture leaving Varese's historic center behind and, within twenty minutes, climbing the switchbacks of the Sacro Monte di Varese, past chapel after chapel, toward the hilltop sanctuary. Turn the other way and you're gliding along the shore of Lago di Monate, one of Lombardy's cleanest lakes, with nothing between you and a lunch stop by the water. A scooter rental in Varese turns these separate day trips into a single loop, and you'll cover in an afternoon what would otherwise eat up your whole stay.
Varese's compact center makes cars more trouble than they're worth, and its surroundings do the rest of the convincing: a mountain right at the city's edge, four lakes within a fifteen- to thirty-minute ride, and roads that swing between short steep climbs and flat lakeside stretches. A bicycle struggles with the climbs, a car struggles with parking — a scooter handles both without fuss, which is exactly why so many visitors choose to rent a scooter in Varese rather than rely on public transport.
For mopeds up to 50cc you'll need at least a category AM licence; anything from 50cc up to 125cc requires category A1. If you only hold a car licence, some operators will let you ride a 125cc scooter under Italy's rules for B-licence holders, but this varies by rental company, so it's worth confirming before you book. If your licence wasn't issued in the EU or EEA, bring an International Driving Permit. Rental companies typically expect renters to be adults and will ask for a deposit, usually held on a credit card, scaled to the value of the scooter.
Prices on our website start as low as EUR 5 per day in low season, with typical low-season rates running EUR 5–15 per day. In high season expect EUR 20–40 per day, and EUR 35–60 per day for a larger or newer model.
High season runs June through August, when Campo dei Fiori's roads and the lakeside routes are busiest and prices sit at their highest. Low season stretches from November to March, with quieter roads and prices at their lowest — though winter weather can make the mountain climbs less appealing. For the best balance of good weather, open roads and fair prices, aim for May, June, September or early October, and book a few days ahead if you're arriving in peak summer.
Italy drives on the right, and helmets are mandatory for every rider and passenger on a scooter, with no exceptions by age. Speed limits are 50 km/h in town, 90 km/h on ordinary roads outside built-up areas, and lower again on the switchbacks up to Sacro Monte or Campo dei Fiori, so take the climbs at an easy pace. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, dropping to zero if you've held your licence less than three years. Scooters must run with dipped headlights on at all times, day or night.
